Overview

An observer watches the block directly in front of its face and emits a short redstone pulse the instant that block changes state. It does not care what the change is — a crop growing a stage, a piston extending, a log being placed, water flowing in, a leaf decaying, another observer firing — which makes it the most general-purpose detector in the game and by far the smallest. The pulse it produces is one redstone tick long, roughly a tenth of a second, which is short enough to drive a piston without leaving it extended and fast enough to build clocks from. Two observers facing each other's output faces form the tightest clock in Minecraft, and that pattern is the basis of most flying machines. The output comes from the back, the small dot-and-arrow face, and it powers the block behind it as well as any dust attached to it. Observers detect through their own face only, so orientation matters absolutely; placed the wrong way round they simply never fire. Crop farms, bamboo and sugar cane farms, piston doors, item elevators and self-resetting traps are all built on this one block.

Detecting crop growth for automatic farms, triggering piston doors, building 1-tick clocks and flying machines, and firing a dispenser the moment something changes rather than on a timer.

In Minecraft 1.21.4, Observer is a redstone block. Observer is made at a crafting table. Hardness 3 puts it in the middle of the pack for mining speed.

Mine it with a wooden pickaxe or better, or you get no drop at all. Broken correctly, it drops itself. Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot.

The recipe calls for Cobblestone, Redstone Dust, and Nether Quartz. It is not used in any crafting recipe.

How to get it

Craft an observer from 6 cobblestone, 2 redstone dust and 1 nether quartz. The quartz means a Nether trip first, though quartz needs only a wooden pickaxe and generates uniformly between Y 10 and Y 117.

Tips

  • The face with the dot is the output and the flat face is the sensor; placing it backwards is the most common redstone mistake.
  • Two observers facing each other make the fastest clock in the game and will lag a server if you leave several running.
  • Observers detect their own kind, so a chain of them propagates a signal faster than repeaters over the same distance.
  • See redstone basics for how a 1-tick pulse behaves differently from a lever's steady signal.

How long it takes to break

Observer sits at hardness 3: 15 seconds per block with your fists, 0.5 with the correct netherite tool.

You are looking at 0.75 seconds on iron and 0.6 on diamond — the iron step is where the time actually falls.

A weaker tool still breaks it, but anything under wooden returns nothing — you spend the time and lose the drop, which is how most veins get wasted.

The Efficiency formula is level² + 1 added to tool speed — at V that is about 3.3 times the unenchanted rate.

Properties

Observer has a blast resistance of 3, so a nearby explosion will usually destroy it. It blocks light completely and emits no light of its own. One inventory slot holds 64, the normal full stack. A pickaxe is fastest here; any other class mines it at bare-hand speed, because the bonus only applies to the class the block is tagged for.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get Observer in Minecraft?

Observer is crafted from Cobblestone, Redstone Dust, and Nether Quartz.

What tool do you need to break Observer?

Wooden Pickaxe or better is required; anything weaker destroys the block without dropping it.

Is Observer blast resistant?

Observer has a blast resistance of 3, so an explosion nearby will destroy it.

How many Observer fit in one stack?

Observer stacks to 64, which puts 3,456 of them in a double chest.

How long does Observer take to break?

About 0.5 seconds if you bring the correct netherite tool; 15 seconds with your fists.
