Armor Stand — Minecraft item

Overview

An Armor Stand displays a full set of armour, and it does two jobs a chest cannot. First, it is storage you can read at a glance: a stand by the door holding your spare diamond set means you never have to remember which chest the leggings are in, and swapping gear is a matter of clicking rather than inventory management. Second, it is a building block — stands hold heads, carved pumpkins, elytra and any armour piece, so builders use them as scarecrows, statues, shop mannequins and signage. Crafting takes 6 sticks and a smooth stone slab, which makes it cheap enough to place several. In Java Edition a plain stand has no arms and cannot hold a weapon without commands, and it can be posed only through commands or map-making tools, which is the main limitation compared with Bedrock Edition. A stand takes damage from mobs and explosions and drops as an item when broken, along with everything it was wearing, so keep them inside where a creeper cannot reach. A rack of them by the door is what a well-organised base looks like.

Displaying and storing a full armour set where you can see and swap it, and acting as a mannequin, statue or shop display in builds.

Armor Stand is a decorative item in Minecraft 1.21.4. It stacks only to 16. You make it with Stick and Smooth Stone Slab.

No recipe takes it as an ingredient.

How to get it

Craft 1 from 6 Sticks and 1 Smooth Stone Slab. Smooth stone comes from smelting stone twice — cobblestone to stone, then stone to smooth stone — which is the step most players miss.

Tips

Smooth stone is stone smelted a second time; the recipe does not accept ordinary stone slabs.
A stand by the door holding a spare set turns re-equipping after a death into a single click.
Java stands have no arms without commands, so they cannot hold a sword or a tool by default.
Break the stand and everything on it drops, so keep them behind walls and away from creepers.
