Overview
A sculk shrieker is the block that summons the warden, and it is the reason the deep dark is dangerous rather than merely atmospheric. When a vibration reaches a naturally generated shrieker it shrieks, and each shriek raises your warning level: the first two produce a sound and a darkening screen, and the third causes a warden to dig itself out of the ground nearby. The warning level decays over about ten minutes if nothing triggers another shriek, so a careful player can cross an ancient city on one or two shrieks and never meet anything. Crucially, only naturally generated shriekers can summon: a shrieker collected with Silk Touch and replaced elsewhere still shrieks and still applies Darkness, but it will never spawn a warden, which is what makes it safe to use as a decorative or redstone block in a build. It can also be triggered directly by redstone rather than by vibration. The Darkness effect it applies is a genuine hazard on its own, since it periodically cuts your visible range to almost nothing while something with 500 health is hunting you by sound.
Applying Darkness deliberately in an adventure map or a themed build, and, in its natural state, as the warning system that gates access to ancient city loot.
Minecraft classifies Sculk Shrieker as a stone-family block. Hardness 3 puts it in the middle of the pack for mining speed. A full stack holds 64.
It is not used in any crafting recipe.
How to get it
Collect one from the deep dark with Silk Touch — any other tool destroys it and drops nothing while giving 5 experience. There is no crafting recipe, and only shriekers still in their original position can summon a warden.
Tips
- Count your shrieks: the 3rd one in a session spawns a warden, and the counter decays over roughly 10 minutes.
- A shrieker you place yourself never summons a warden, so it is safe as a decoration or a Darkness trap.
- Sneak everywhere in the deep dark — crouch-walking produces no vibration and no shrieker will ever hear you.
- Cover a shrieker with wool or simply break it if you are clearing a route through an ancient city.

How long it takes to break
Sculk Shrieker sits at hardness 3: 4.5 seconds per block with your fists, 0.5 with the correct netherite tool.
Iron takes 0.75 seconds against diamond's 0.6, so the upgrade worth making for this block is the one to iron.
The drop does not depend on the tool — bare hands work as well as anything — so the table below is purely about speed.
The Efficiency formula is level² + 1 added to tool speed — at V that is about 3.3 times the unenchanted rate.

Blast resistance on Sculk Shrieker is 3, so an explosion nearby will usually take it out. It stops light entirely and gives off no light. One inventory slot holds 64, the normal full stack. It is renewable, so a single world can supply an unlimited amount of it. A hoe is the fastest choice here. A tool of the wrong class is no better than your fist — the speed bonus is tied to the block's own tool tag.
