Overview
Sculk is the dark, veined block that carpets the floor of the deep dark, and it is the only block in Minecraft that spreads because something died. A sculk catalyst placed anywhere in the world will convert the ground around it into sculk whenever a mob dies within roughly 8 blocks, consuming the experience that mob would have dropped to pay for the spread — which is why a deep dark looks the way it does, and why players build sculk farms to convert a room into it deliberately. On its own the block is inert: no light, no signal, no interaction. It is a floor covering and an experience store. Mining sculk gives 1 experience point, and without Silk Touch it drops nothing at all, so gathering it for building means bringing a Silk Touch hoe, which is the fastest tool for it. Its practical value is aesthetic and acoustic: sculk is the darkest black-blue solid block in the game, a natural partner for deepslate and the sculk sensor family, and it is the visual signature of the deep dark in any build that wants to reference it.
The darkest floor block available for a build, the visual base of any deep-dark themed room, and — through a sculk catalyst — a way to convert a mob farm's kill floor into experience-free terrain deliberately.
Sculk counts as a stone-family block in Minecraft 1.21.4. A hardness of 0.2 means it is one of the quicker blocks to clear. No specific tool is required to collect it.
With a blast resistance of only 0.2 it will not survive an explosion. Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot. No recipe takes it as an ingredient.
How to get it
Mine it with a Silk Touch hoe in the deep dark, which generates below Y 0 under mountainous terrain, usually around Y -30 to bedrock. Without Silk Touch it drops nothing and gives 1 experience instead.
Tips
- A hoe is the correct tool: it mines sculk several times faster than a shovel or pickaxe.
- Silk Touch is mandatory to collect it; there is no alternative and no drop without the enchantment.
- Sculk spread costs the experience the mob would have dropped, so a catalyst beside a farm silently eats your XP.
- Combine it with deepslate and sculk veins for the darkest palette in the game — nothing else is close.
Version notes
Sculk and the whole sculk family were added in 1.19 (The Wild Update) and are unchanged in 1.21.4.
How long it takes to break
At a hardness of 0.2, Sculk takes 0.3 seconds to punch out and 0.05 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.
Nothing here needs a minimum tier: whatever you swing, the block still drops, and the only difference is how long it takes.
Each Efficiency level adds level² + 1 to the tool's speed; against a block this soft, instant mining arrives after only a level or two.
| Tool | No enchantment | Efficiency III | Efficiency V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand | 0.3 s | 0.3 s | 0.3 s |
| Wooden | 0.15 s | instant | instant |
| Stone | 0.1 s | instant | instant |
| Iron | instant | instant | instant |
| Diamond | instant | instant | instant |
| Netherite | instant | instant | instant |
| Golden | instant | instant | instant |
Properties
Blast resistance on Sculk is 0.2, so any explosion nearby takes it out. It stops light entirely and gives off no light. Stack size is 64 — the standard full stack. It renews, so a single world will never run out. A hoe is the fastest choice here. A tool of the wrong class is no better than your fist — the speed bonus is tied to the block's own tool tag.

Sculk generates naturally in the world and does not drop anything without Silk Touch.
What tool do you need to break Sculk?
No specific tool is required — Sculk can be broken by hand.
Is Sculk blast resistant?
Sculk has a blast resistance of 0.2, so an explosion nearby will destroy it.
How many Sculk fit in one stack?
Sculk stacks to 64, which puts 3,456 of them in a double chest.
Is Sculk renewable?
Yes. Sculk can be obtained again and again in one world, so building with it does not exhaust the supply.
