Overview
Redstone ore sits in the deepest layers of the world alongside diamond, which is the single most useful thing to know about it: a strip mine at Y -59 harvests both at once, so a redstone trip is never a separate trip. Its main band runs from Y -64 to Y -32 and peaks at Y -59, with a second uniform band from bedrock up to about Y 15 that explains why redstone turns up on the way down as well as at the bottom. Each block drops 4 to 5 dust before Fortune, which is generous enough that redstone almost never becomes a bottleneck once you have reached deepslate — one good session fills a shulker box. It needs an iron pickaxe and gives 1 to 5 experience per block. The block has a behaviour no other ore has: it lights up and emits particles when a player or mob touches it, staying lit for a few seconds afterwards, which makes it easy to spot in an unlit cave and also makes it a genuinely usable decorative light if you collect it with Silk Touch.
Every redstone component in the game — repeaters, comparators, pistons, observers, dispensers, lamps — plus redstone blocks for storage and the potion ingredient that extends duration.
Minecraft classifies Redstone Ore as a stone-family block. It has no crafting recipe — you collect it by mining it where it generates. Hardness 3 puts it in the middle of the pack for mining speed.
Mine it with an iron pickaxe or better, or you get no drop at all. Instead of dropping itself it yields Redstone Dust. Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot.
The one thing it makes is Redstone Dust.
How to get it
Mine it with an iron pickaxe or better at Y -59, where it peaks alongside diamond. 1 block drops 4 to 5 dust before Fortune, and Silk Touch collects the glowing ore block itself.
Tips
- Mine redstone and diamond in the same tunnel at Y -59; both peak there and the trip costs you nothing extra.
- Silk Touch the ore block if you want a floor that lights up when walked on — the only pressure-sensitive light in the game.
- 9 dust make 1 redstone block, so a stack of blocks is 576 dust in a single inventory slot.
- Redstone dust extends a potion's duration; glowstone raises its level, and the two cannot be used together.
How long it takes to break
At a hardness of 3, Redstone Ore takes 15 seconds to punch out and 0.5 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.
Iron manages 0.75 seconds and diamond 0.6, which makes iron the tier that changes how this block feels.
The block still breaks with a weaker tool, but below iron it yields nothing at all — the time is spent and the drop is lost, which is the single most common way players waste a vein.
Efficiency adds its level squared plus one to the tool speed, so Efficiency V is about 3.3 times faster than the same tool unenchanted.
| Tool | No enchantment | Efficiency III | Efficiency V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand * | 15 s | 15 s | 15 s |
| Wooden * | 7.5 s | 1.3 s | 0.55 s |
| Stone * | 3.8 s | 1.1 s | 0.5 s |
| Iron | 0.75 s | 0.3 s | 0.15 s |
| Diamond | 0.6 s | 0.25 s | 0.15 s |
| Netherite | 0.5 s | 0.25 s | 0.15 s |
| Golden * | 1.3 s | 0.7 s | 0.4 s |
Properties
Redstone Ore resists blasts at 3, which usually is not enough when something explodes nearby. Light does not pass through it, and it emits none of its own. Stack size is 64 — the standard full stack. A pickaxe is the fastest choice here. A tool of the wrong class is no better than your fist — the speed bonus is tied to the block's own tool tag. Broken normally it drops Redstone Dust rather than itself; Silk Touch is what returns the block, and Fortune raises the ordinary drop instead.

Frequently asked questions
How do you get Redstone Ore in Minecraft?
Redstone Ore generates naturally in the world; breaking it yields Redstone Dust.
What tool do you need to break Redstone Ore?
Iron Pickaxe or better is required; anything weaker destroys the block without dropping it.
Is Redstone Ore blast resistant?
