Overview
Copper generates in very large veins and drops 2 to 5 raw copper per block before Fortune, which makes it the most generous ore in the game by volume — a single good vein can be half a stack of ingots. Its main band runs from Y -16 to Y 112 and peaks around Y 48, but the detail that matters is the second variant: dripstone caves get their own oversized copper blobs, so a dripstone cave at around Y 48 will produce several stacks in a single trip while an ordinary cave at the same depth produces a handful. It needs a stone pickaxe. What copper is for changed considerably in 1.21. It has always fed lightning rods, spyglasses and brushes, and the copper block family with its four oxidation stages has always been a building material, but 1.21 added copper bulbs, copper grates, copper doors and copper trapdoors, and trial chambers are built out of copper and tuff, so the material now has a proper role in redstone and in structure-matching builds rather than being mainly decorative. Silk Touch collects the ore block itself, but Fortune is strictly better here because it multiplies the raw copper drop.
Lightning rods, spyglasses and brushes, plus copper bulbs, grates, doors and trapdoors from 1.21, and the four-stage oxidising block family that is the only building material in the game that ages.
Minecraft classifies Copper Ore as a stone-family block. It is gathered by mining rather than crafted. At a hardness of 3 it takes a moment to break but never slows a build down.
It needs at least a stone pickaxe to drop anything; a weaker tool destroys it for nothing. What you actually collect is Raw Copper. A full stack holds 64.
Its only crafting use is Copper Ingot.

Tips
- Head for a dripstone cave around Y 48: its oversized blobs make it several times faster than ordinary copper mining.
- Fortune III multiplies the already generous 2-to-5 drop, so an enchanted pickaxe pays for itself on 1 vein.
- Wax copper builds with honeycomb to freeze the oxidation stage you want, and scrape it back with an axe.
- A lightning rod costs only 3 copper ingots and stops a thunderstorm setting a wooden build alight.
How long it takes to break
Copper Ore has a hardness of 3. By hand that is 15 seconds per block; with the correct tool at netherite tier it is 0.5 seconds.
Iron manages 0.75 seconds and diamond 0.6, which makes iron the tier that changes how this block feels.
Below stone the block breaks and simply vanishes. Bring the right tier or leave it in the ground.
Efficiency contributes its level squared plus one to tool speed, which makes Efficiency V roughly 3.3 times faster than the plain tool.

Properties
Blast resistance on Copper Ore is 3, so an explosion nearby will usually take it out. It stops light entirely and gives off no light. One inventory slot holds 64, the normal full stack. The fastest tool for it is a pickaxe; any other kind of tool mines it no faster than a bare hand does, because the speed bonus only applies to the tool class the block is tagged for. Broken normally it drops Raw Copper rather than itself; Silk Touch is what returns the block, and Fortune raises the ordinary drop instead.
