Overview
Emerald is the rarest ore in the Overworld and behaves unlike any other. It generates only in mountain biomes — windswept hills, windswept gravelly hills, windswept forest, meadow, grove, snowy slopes, jagged peaks, frozen peaks, stony peaks and cherry grove — and nowhere else at any depth, and it almost always generates as a single isolated block rather than a vein. Its range runs from Y -16 to Y 320 and peaks around Y 236, which is high in the mountain rather than deep underground, so the correct technique is a horizontal tunnel through a peak rather than a shaft downwards. It needs an iron pickaxe and gives 3 to 7 experience. In practice almost nobody mines emeralds seriously, because villager trading produces them far faster: a librarian buying paper or a farmer buying wheat will hand over more emeralds in an afternoon than a week of tunnelling through a jagged peak. The ore is still worth recognising when you see it in an exposed cliff face, and emerald blocks make a beacon pyramid as well as any other valid material.

Emerald Ore is a stone-family block in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. It has no crafting recipe — you collect it by mining it where it generates. Hardness 3 puts it in the middle of the pack for mining speed.
Mine it with an iron pickaxe or better, or you get no drop at all. Instead of dropping itself it yields Emerald. Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot.
The one thing it makes is Emerald.
How to get it
Mine it with an iron pickaxe in a mountain biome, tunnelling horizontally near Y 236 where it peaks. It generates as single blocks rather than veins, so expect 2 or 3 from a long tunnel.
Tips
- Trade rather than mine: a farmer or librarian villager produces emeralds far faster than any tunnel in a peak.
- It only generates in the 10 mountain biomes — no amount of digging elsewhere will ever find any.
- Single blocks rather than veins means horizontal distance matters more than depth; tunnel along Y 236.
- Emerald blocks work in a beacon pyramid exactly as iron or gold do, which is a use for a surplus.
How long it takes to break
Emerald Ore sits at hardness 3: 15 seconds per block with your fists, 0.5 with the correct netherite tool.
You are looking at 0.75 seconds on iron and 0.6 on diamond — the iron step is where the time actually falls.
Below iron the block breaks and simply vanishes. Bring the right tier or leave it in the ground.
Each Efficiency level adds level² + 1 to the tool's speed, so a level V tool clears this about 3.3 times faster than an unenchanted one.

Properties
Emerald Ore has a blast resistance of 3, so a nearby explosion will usually destroy it. It blocks light completely and emits no light of its own. A single slot takes 64, the usual full stack. The block is tagged for pickaxes, and only that class gets the speed bonus; everything else mines at bare-hand rate. Broken normally it drops Emerald rather than itself; Silk Touch is what returns the block, and Fortune raises the ordinary drop instead.
