Overview
Coal ore is the first ore almost every player mines and the most abundant in the game. It generates in unusually large veins — up to seventeen blocks — across a huge vertical range, with a main band from Y 0 to Y 192 peaking around Y 96 and a second upper band running from roughly Y 136 to the build limit. That upper band is why mountainsides and cliff faces are studded with coal, and why deliberate coal mining is largely unnecessary: prospecting on the surface of a windswept hill or a stony peak finds more coal per minute than a tunnel does. Notably it does not generate in the lowest few layers of the world, so a diamond mine at Y -59 will never turn up coal. It needs only a wooden pickaxe, drops one coal, and gives 0 to 2 experience. Coal's real value is early: it fuels furnaces at 8 items each and makes 4 torches per lump, which matters more in the first hour of a world than anything else in the ground. Later most players switch to charcoal from a tree farm or dried kelp blocks, and stop mining coal on purpose entirely.
Torches at 4 per lump, furnace fuel at 8 items per coal, campfires, and the coal blocks that fuel 80 smelts each. It is also the ingredient in a fire charge and a firework star's flash effect.
Coal Ore is a stone-family block in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. It is gathered by mining rather than crafted. At a hardness of 3 it takes a moment to break but never slows a build down.
It needs at least a wooden pickaxe to drop anything; a weaker tool destroys it for nothing. What you actually collect is Coal. A full stack holds 64.
Its only crafting use is Coal.
How to get it
Mine it with any pickaxe, including wood. It peaks around Y 96 and has a second band above Y 136 that is exposed on mountain faces, so surface prospecting usually beats tunnelling for it.
Tips
- Look on cliff faces above Y 136 rather than digging: the upper coal band is exposed almost everywhere in mountains.
- 9 coal make 1 coal block, which smelts 80 items — the most compact fuel storage that is not a lava bucket.
- Charcoal from a furnace does everything coal does except craft into a block, so a tree farm replaces coal mining entirely.
- Fortune III on the pickaxe multiplies the drop, but coal is abundant enough that Fortune is better saved for other ores.
How long it takes to break
Coal Ore sits at hardness 3: 15 seconds per block with your fists, 0.5 with the correct netherite tool.
Iron manages 0.75 seconds and diamond 0.6, which makes iron the tier that changes how this block feels.
The block still breaks with a weaker tool, but below wooden it yields nothing at all — the time is spent and the drop is lost, which is the single most common way players waste a vein.
Efficiency adds its level squared plus one to the tool speed, so Efficiency V is about 3.3 times faster than the same tool unenchanted.
| Tool | No enchantment | Efficiency III | Efficiency V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand * | 15 s | 15 s | 15 s |
| Wooden | 2.3 s | 0.4 s | 0.2 s |
| Stone | 1.2 s | 0.35 s | 0.15 s |
| Iron | 0.75 s | 0.3 s | 0.15 s |
| Diamond | 0.6 s | 0.25 s | 0.15 s |
| Netherite | 0.5 s | 0.25 s | 0.15 s |
| Golden | 0.4 s | 0.25 s | 0.15 s |
Properties
With 3 blast resistance Coal Ore usually goes down to a nearby explosion. It is fully opaque and produces no light. One inventory slot holds 64, the normal full stack. The block is tagged for pickaxes, and only that class gets the speed bonus; everything else mines at bare-hand rate. Broken normally it drops Coal rather than itself; Silk Touch is what returns the block, and Fortune raises the ordinary drop instead.

Where it generates
The most abundant ore in the game and the first one every player mines. It generates in very large veins, up to seventeen blocks, and is exposed constantly on mountain and cliff faces, so surface prospecting usually beats digging for it. Coal fuels furnaces at eight items each and crafts torches, which matters far more early than the ore itself. Once you have a full set of iron, most players stop mining coal deliberately and burn charcoal or lava instead.
A second, upper band generates roughly from Y=136 to Y=320 and is what makes coal so easy to find on mountainsides and cliff faces. Coal does not generate in the lowest few layers of the world.

Frequently asked questions
How do you get Coal Ore in Minecraft?
Coal Ore generates naturally in the world; breaking it yields Coal.
What tool do you need to break Coal Ore?
Wooden Pickaxe or better is required; anything weaker destroys the block without dropping it.
Is Coal Ore blast resistant?
Coal Ore has a blast resistance of 3, so an explosion nearby will destroy it.
How many Coal Ore fit in one stack?
Coal Ore stacks to 64, which puts 3,456 of them in a double chest.
How long does Coal Ore take to break?
About 0.5 seconds if you bring the correct netherite tool; 15 seconds with your fists.
