Overview

Iron has the widest generation range of any ore in the game and is the backbone of the entire mid game — tools, armour, buckets, hoppers, rails, anvils, shields and every piece of redstone machinery that is not made of stone. It generates in three overlapping bands: a middle band from Y -24 to Y 56 peaking at Y 16, a large mountain band from roughly Y 80 to Y 384 peaking near Y 232, and a thin scatter from bedrock up to about Y 72. Since 1.18 that mountain band has changed how most players gather iron: a jagged peak or a stony peak has ore visible in the open rock face, so an hour on a mountainside with a stone pickaxe outproduces a deep mine and never risks lava. Iron ore drops raw iron rather than an ingot, so a furnace or blast furnace is still required, and Fortune multiplies the raw drop, which makes Fortune strictly better than Silk Touch here. Eventually an iron golem farm replaces mining entirely, but everything before that point runs on ore.

Buckets, shields, anvils, hoppers, rails, iron doors, and the full tool and armour tier that carries most players from their first cave to diamond. Almost every redstone build needs iron somewhere.

Iron Ore is one of the 3 variants of this shape in the game. What changes between them is the material, and with it the hardness, the drops, the durability and the recipe — so every figure on this page is this variant's own. Copper Ore is the same shape in a different material.

Iron Ore is a stone-family block in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. There is no way to craft it; you have to find it and mine it. Its hardness of 3 makes it a normal, unhurried block to mine.

Anything below a stone pickaxe breaks it without leaving a drop. Breaking it produces Raw Iron. It stacks to 64.

It goes into exactly one recipe: Iron Ingot.

How to get it

Mine it with a stone pickaxe or better. It peaks at Y 16 underground and near Y 232 in mountains, and 1 block drops 1 raw iron before Fortune, which needs smelting into an ingot.

Tips

  • Mine the mountain band above Y 200 from outside — veins are exposed in the rock face and need no tunnel or torches.
  • Fortune beats Silk Touch on iron: Silk Touch gives 1 ingot per block after smelting, Fortune multiplies the raw drop.
  • A blast furnace smelts raw iron in 5 seconds instead of 10, which halves the wait on a full mining haul.
  • See best Y level for every ore for how the 3 iron bands overlap.

How long it takes to break

Iron Ore has a hardness of 3. By hand that is 15 seconds per block; with the correct tool at netherite tier it is 0.5 seconds.

An iron tool takes 0.75 seconds and a diamond one 0.6, so the jump that actually matters for this block is the one to iron.

The block still breaks with a weaker tool, but below stone it yields nothing at all — the time is spent and the drop is lost, which is the single most common way players waste a vein.

The Efficiency formula is level² + 1 added to tool speed — at V that is about 3.3 times the unenchanted rate.

Properties

Iron Ore has a blast resistance of 3, so a nearby explosion will usually destroy it. It blocks light completely and emits no light of its own. A single slot takes 64, the usual full stack. A pickaxe is the fastest choice here. A tool of the wrong class is no better than your fist — the speed bonus is tied to the block's own tool tag. Broken normally it drops Raw Iron rather than itself; Silk Touch is what returns the block, and Fortune raises the ordinary drop instead.

Where it generates

Iron is the backbone of the mid game and the ore with the widest generation range of any: it appears in mountain peaks above Y=200 and in deep caves alike. Since 1.18 the mountain band has made snowy peaks and jagged peaks a genuinely fast way to gather iron without going underground at all. Ore drops raw iron rather than the block, so a furnace or blast furnace is still required. Iron golem farms eventually replace mining entirely.

Iron generates in three overlapping bands: this middle one peaking at Y=16, a large mountain band from about Y=80 to Y=384 peaking near Y=232, and a small, thinly scattered band from bedrock up to about Y=72.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get Iron Ore in Minecraft?

Iron Ore generates naturally in the world; breaking it yields Raw Iron.

What tool do you need to break Iron Ore?

Stone Pickaxe or better is required; anything weaker destroys the block without dropping it.

Is Iron Ore blast resistant?

Iron Ore has a blast resistance of 3, so an explosion nearby will destroy it.

How many Iron Ore fit in one stack?

Iron Ore stacks to 64, so a single double chest holds 3,456 of them.

How long does Iron Ore take to break?

About 0.5 seconds if you bring the correct netherite tool; 15 seconds with your fists.

The rest of the set

Iron Ore is one of 3 variants of the same shape. The others are made from different materials, so their numbers differ:
