Overview

Overworld gold is scarce, needs an iron pickaxe and generates deep — a band from Y -64 to Y 32 peaking at Y -16 — which puts it in the same trip as diamond and redstone rather than being worth a journey of its own. Badlands biomes break that rule entirely. Badlands run a separate, much richer gold distribution that generates ore from about Y 32 all the way to Y 256, exposed in the terracotta cliffs and in the near-surface mineshafts, so a badlands is the one place in the Overworld where gold is gathered rather than hunted. Gold ore drops raw gold, which needs smelting, and Fortune multiplies the raw drop. As a material gold is soft and near-useless for tools — a golden pickaxe has the worst durability in the game — but it is essential for powered rails, clocks, golden apples, golden carrots, and the gold armour that makes piglins tolerate you in the Nether. In practice most players get their gold by bartering with piglins rather than mining, since nether gold ore is far more common and piglins trade generously.

Powered rails, clocks, golden apples and golden carrots, and the gold armour that keeps piglins neutral. Gold ingots are also the currency piglins barter for ender pearls, obsidian and fire resistance potions.

In Minecraft 1.21.4, Gold Ore is a stone-family block. There is no way to craft it; you have to find it and mine it. Its hardness of 3 makes it a normal, unhurried block to mine.

Anything below an iron pickaxe breaks it without leaving a drop. Breaking it produces Raw Gold. It stacks to 64.

It goes into exactly one recipe: Gold Ingot.

How to get it

Mine it with an iron pickaxe or better. It peaks at Y -16 in ordinary terrain, but badlands generate it from roughly Y 32 to Y 256 in the open, which is by far the fastest source.

Tips

  • Go to a badlands rather than mining deep: gold there is exposed in the cliffs from Y 32 up to Y 256.
  • A golden pickaxe mines fast but has only 32 durability, so gold is almost never worth spending on tools.
  • Wear at least 1 piece of gold armour in the Nether and piglins ignore you completely.
  • Nether gold ore drops 2 to 6 nuggets and needs only a wooden pickaxe, which makes the Nether the practical gold source.

How long it takes to break

Hardness 3 puts Gold Ore at 15 seconds a block bare-handed, or 0.5 seconds with the right tool at netherite tier.

An iron tool takes 0.75 seconds and a diamond one 0.6, so the jump that actually matters for this block is the one to iron.

The block still breaks with a weaker tool, but below iron it yields nothing at all — the time is spent and the drop is lost, which is the single most common way players waste a vein.

The Efficiency formula is level² + 1 added to tool speed — at V that is about 3.3 times the unenchanted rate.

Properties

With 3 blast resistance Gold Ore usually goes down to a nearby explosion. It is fully opaque and produces no light. One inventory slot holds 64, the normal full stack. The block is tagged for pickaxes, and only that class gets the speed bonus; everything else mines at bare-hand rate. Broken normally it drops Raw Gold rather than itself; Silk Touch is what returns the block, and Fortune raises the ordinary drop instead.

Where it generates

Overworld gold is scarce and needs an iron pickaxe, but badlands biomes break the rule completely: gold generates near the surface there in enormous quantity, exposed in the mesa cliffs and abandoned mineshafts. Gold is soft and near-useless for tools, yet essential for powered rails, clocks, golden apples, and the gold armour that makes piglins tolerate you. Most players get their gold from Nether bartering rather than the Overworld.

Badlands biomes have a separate, much richer distribution that generates gold in the open from roughly Y=32 up to Y=256, often visible in the terracotta cliffs without mining at all.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get Gold Ore in Minecraft?

Gold Ore generates naturally in the world; breaking it yields Raw Gold.

What tool do you need to break Gold Ore?

Iron Pickaxe or better is required; anything weaker destroys the block without dropping it.

Is Gold Ore blast resistant?

Gold Ore has a blast resistance of 3, so an explosion nearby will destroy it.

How many Gold Ore fit in one stack?

Gold Ore stacks to 64, so a single double chest holds 3,456 of them.

How long does Gold Ore take to break?

About 0.5 seconds if you bring the correct netherite tool; 15 seconds with your fists.
