Overview
Nether gold ore is the Nether's answer to the Overworld's scarce gold, and it is a much better answer. It generates uniformly throughout the Nether between Y 10 and Y 117, it needs only a wooden pickaxe, and it drops 2 to 6 gold nuggets rather than raw gold — so roughly nine blocks make about four ingots. Basalt deltas get an extra generation pass and are noticeably richer. Silk Touch changes the arithmetic: the block collected intact can be smelted into a full gold ingot rather than nuggets, which is a meaningful improvement if you are gathering in bulk. The catch is social. Mining nether gold ore within sight of a piglin angers every piglin in the area immediately and permanently, gold armour or not — wearing gold stops them attacking you on sight, but it does not excuse mining their gold in front of them. Clear the area first or mine out of line of sight. Since gold ingots are the currency for piglin bartering, and bartering is where ender pearls, obsidian, fire resistance potions and crying obsidian come from, nether gold ore is effectively the Nether's cash crop.

In Minecraft 1.21.4, Nether Gold Ore is a stone-family block. It has no crafting recipe — you collect it by mining it where it generates. Hardness 3 puts it in the middle of the pack for mining speed.
Mine it with a wooden pickaxe or better, or you get no drop at all. Instead of dropping itself it yields Gold Nugget. Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot.
The one thing it makes is Gold Ingot.
How to get it
Mine it with any pickaxe between Y 10 and Y 117 anywhere in the Nether. 1 block drops 2 to 6 nuggets, and Silk Touch lets you smelt the block into a full ingot instead.
Tips
- Never mine it while a piglin can see you — every piglin nearby turns hostile permanently, gold armour or not.
- Silk Touch plus a furnace gives 1 full ingot per block instead of nuggets, which is a real gain in bulk.
- 9 nuggets make 1 ingot, so a stack of nuggets is a little over 7 ingots.
- Basalt deltas have the highest density, but the terrain kills more players than the piglins do.
How long it takes to break
Nether Gold Ore has a hardness of 3. By hand that is 15 seconds per block; with the correct tool at netherite tier it is 0.5 seconds.
You are looking at 0.75 seconds on iron and 0.6 on diamond — the iron step is where the time actually falls.
Below wooden the block breaks and simply vanishes. Bring the right tier or leave it in the ground.
Each Efficiency level adds level² + 1 to the tool's speed, so a level V tool clears this about 3.3 times faster than an unenchanted one.

Properties
Nether Gold Ore has a blast resistance of 3, so a nearby explosion will usually destroy it. It blocks light completely and emits no light of its own. A single slot takes 64, the usual full stack. A pickaxe is the fastest choice here. A tool of the wrong class is no better than your fist — the speed bonus is tied to the block's own tool tag. Broken normally it drops Gold Nugget rather than itself; Silk Touch is what returns the block, and Fortune raises the ordinary drop instead.
