Overview

Copper is the cheap, plentiful metal that became genuinely useful in 1.21. It smelts from copper ore, which generates in enormous veins between Y 112 and Y -16 with a peak around Y 48 and vast deposits in dripstone caves, so a single vein can produce dozens of ingots. The functional items are the Spyglass, the Brush and the lightning rod, and the building set is the real attraction: copper blocks oxidise through four visible stages from bright orange to green over real in-game time, and waxing any stage with honeycomb freezes it there permanently. That gives builders a palette of colours from one material. 1.21 added the copper bulb, a light source that toggles with a redstone pulse and dims as it oxidises, along with copper doors, trapdoors and grates, which turned copper from a decorative curiosity into a proper building and redstone material. Nine ingots make a block, and an axe scrapes wax or oxidation back a stage at a time if you change your mind. It is now the material a well-built base uses most after wood and stone.

It is crafted from Block of Copper. A furnace turns Copper Ore into it. 5 recipes call for it, including Brush, Copper Door, Copper Trapdoor and 2 more.

How to get it

Smelt raw copper, which drops 2 to 5 per ore block, up to 20 with Fortune III and about double on average. Copper ore peaks around Y 48 and generates in very large veins, especially in dripstone caves.

Tips

Wax a copper block with Honeycomb to freeze its oxidation stage exactly where you want it.
An axe scrapes wax off or steps oxidation back one stage, so a build can be tuned rather than rebuilt.
Copper bulbs added in 1.21 toggle with a redstone pulse, which makes them the simplest lamp to wire.
Fortune III on copper ore yields up to 15 raw copper per block, which is the fastest way to fill a build's palette.
