Block of Copper — Minecraft block

Overview

A block of copper is the only building material in Minecraft that changes over time. Freshly placed it is a bright salmon-orange; left alone it oxidises through exposed, weathered and finally oxidized, ending as the blue-green of a weathered statue. Each stage is a separate block with its own texture, and the change happens slowly and randomly per block, so a large copper roof ages unevenly and looks genuinely weathered rather than uniformly repainted. Two tools control the process. Honeycomb applied to any stage waxes it, freezing that colour permanently and producing the waxed variant; an axe scrapes a block back one stage, and it also removes wax. Lightning striking a copper block reverts it and several blocks nearby all the way to unoxidised, which is a real mechanic and a genuinely useful one if you have a lightning rod. The waxed variants are separate blocks in the registry, so a waxed weathered block and an unwaxed weathered block look identical and behave differently. Beyond decoration, copper blocks are the storage form for raw copper ingots at 9 to 1, and they are the ingredient for copper bulbs, grates, doors and trapdoors, all of which oxidise on the same schedule.

In Minecraft 1.21.4, Block of Copper is a building block. Block of Copper is made at a crafting table. Hardness 3 puts it in the middle of the pack for mining speed.

Mine it with a stone pickaxe or better, or you get no drop at all. Broken correctly, it drops itself. Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot.

The recipe calls for Copper Ingot. It is an ingredient in 8 recipes, among them Bolt Armor Trim, Copper Bulb, Copper Grate and 5 more.

How to get it

Craft it from 9 copper ingots. Copper ore drops 2 to 5 raw copper per block before Fortune and peaks around Y 48, with oversized veins in dripstone caves that make it the fastest ore in the game to gather in bulk.

Tips

Wax with honeycomb to lock a stage permanently; an axe removes the wax again without changing the colour.
An axe scrapes 1 oxidation stage back per use, so you can tune a wall to exactly the shade you want.
A lightning strike reverts a struck copper block and its neighbours to unoxidised — pair with a lightning rod deliberately.
9 copper ingots per block means a single dripstone cave trip is worth several stacks of building material.

How long it takes to break

At a hardness of 3, Block of Copper takes 15 seconds to punch out and 0.5 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.

An iron tool takes 0.75 seconds and a diamond one 0.6, so the jump that actually matters for this block is the one to iron.

It will break below stone, and you will get nothing for it. That combination of time spent and drop lost is the classic mining mistake.

Efficiency adds its level squared plus one to the tool speed, so Efficiency V is about 3.3 times faster than the same tool unenchanted.

Properties

Blast resistance on Block of Copper is 6, so an explosion nearby will usually take it out. It stops light entirely and gives off no light. A single slot takes 64, the usual full stack. The block is tagged for pickaxes, and only that class gets the speed bonus; everything else mines at bare-hand rate.
