Overview

Block of Iron is one of the 9 variants of this shape in the game. What changes between them is the material, and with it the hardness, the drops, the durability and the recipe — so every figure on this page is this variant's own. Block of Amethyst is the same shape in a different material.

Block of Iron is a building block in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. Block of Iron is made at a crafting table. Expect to wait: its hardness of 5 is well above average.

Mine it with a stone pickaxe or better, or you get no drop at all. Broken correctly, it drops itself. Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot.

The recipe calls for Iron Ingot. Its only crafting use is Anvil.

How long it takes to break

Block of Iron sits at hardness 5: 25 seconds per block with your fists, 0.85 with the correct netherite tool.

An iron tool takes 1.3 seconds and a diamond one 0.95, so the jump that actually matters for this block is the one to diamond.

A weaker tool still breaks it, but anything under stone returns nothing — you spend the time and lose the drop, which is how most veins get wasted.

Each Efficiency level adds level² + 1 to the tool's speed, so a level V tool clears this about 3.4 times faster than an unenchanted one.

Properties

Blast resistance on Block of Iron is 6, so an explosion nearby will usually take it out. It stops light entirely and gives off no light. One inventory slot holds 64, the normal full stack. The fastest tool for it is a pickaxe; any other kind of tool mines it no faster than a bare hand does, because the speed bonus only applies to the tool class the block is tagged for.
