Block of Amethyst — Minecraft block

Overview

An amethyst block is four amethyst shards packed together, and it is one of the very few blocks in Minecraft with a sound design worth building around: walking on it, breaking it or placing it produces a bright chime, and the pitch varies, so a floor of amethyst is an instrument you play by walking. That alone is why it turns up in so many decorative builds. Visually it is a deep translucent purple that pairs naturally with calcite and smooth basalt, the other two materials a geode is made of, giving a ready-made black-white-purple palette that costs one mining trip. It is not transparent and does not emit light, despite looking as though it should. Amethyst blocks come either from crafting four shards or from mining the block layer inside a geode directly, which is faster in bulk. Shards themselves come from harvesting fully grown clusters, which regrow indefinitely on budding amethyst, so the whole material is renewable in a way that ores are not — one geode supplies an unlimited quantity given patience. It is worth noting that amethyst has no tool requirement beyond a pickaxe, so gathering it early costs nothing but the trip down.

Block of Amethyst counts as a stone-family block in Minecraft 1.21.4. Block of Amethyst is made at a crafting table. Hardness 1.5 puts it in the middle of the pack for mining speed.

Mine it with a wooden pickaxe or better, or you get no drop at all. Broken correctly, it drops itself. It offers almost no protection from explosions (1.5 blast resistance).

A full stack holds 64. It is crafted from Amethyst Shard. Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.

How to get it

Craft it from 4 amethyst shards, or mine the amethyst block layer inside a geode with any pickaxe. Geodes generate between Y -58 and Y 30 and each one holds several stacks of the block.

Tips

It chimes when walked on, so an amethyst path is an audible alarm as well as a decoration.
4 shards make 1 block and the block does not uncraft, so break clusters rather than blocks if you need shards.
Calcite, smooth basalt and amethyst all come from the same geode — 1 trip gives a complete 3-colour palette.
Amethyst shards are also the ingredient for a spyglass, tinted glass and the calibrated sculk sensor.

How long it takes to break

Block of Amethyst has a hardness of 1.5. By hand that is 7.5 seconds per block; with the correct tool at netherite tier it is 0.25 seconds.

You are looking at 0.4 seconds on iron and 0.3 on diamond — the diamond step is where the time actually falls.

The block still breaks with a weaker tool, but below wooden it yields nothing at all — the time is spent and the drop is lost, which is the single most common way players waste a vein.

Each Efficiency level adds level² + 1 to the tool's speed, so a level V tool clears this about 2.5 times faster than an unenchanted one.

Properties

Blast resistance on Block of Amethyst is 1.5, so any explosion nearby takes it out. It stops light entirely and gives off no light. 64 fit in a slot — a full stack. A pickaxe is fastest here; any other class mines it at bare-hand speed, because the bonus only applies to the class the block is tagged for.
