Budding Amethyst — Minecraft block

Overview

Budding amethyst is the block that grows crystals, and it is the only genuinely renewable mineral source in Minecraft. It generates in the inner shell of an amethyst geode, and on any of its six faces that touch air or water it will slowly sprout an amethyst bud, which grows through small, medium and large stages into a full amethyst cluster. Harvest the cluster and the face starts again, indefinitely, with no input and no upkeep — a geode is a permanent farm rather than a deposit to strip. The catch is absolute: budding amethyst cannot be collected. Silk Touch does not work on it, pistons cannot push it, and mining it destroys the block and drops nothing at all, which means the farm has to be built around wherever the geode generated. That is the single most important thing to know before you start clearing a geode out, because players routinely mine the budding blocks by accident while gathering the ordinary amethyst blocks around them, and every one destroyed is permanently gone from that world. Treat a geode as a permanent installation rather than a resource to strip out.

Growing amethyst clusters indefinitely from any exposed face, which makes a single geode a renewable source of shards for spyglasses, tinted glass, calibrated sculk sensors and amethyst blocks.

In Minecraft 1.21.4, Budding Amethyst is a stone-family block. Its hardness of 1.5 makes it a normal, unhurried block to mine. Anything below a wooden pickaxe breaks it without leaving a drop.

A blast resistance of 1.5 means a single creeper will clear it away. It is not used in any crafting recipe.

How to get it

It cannot be obtained at all — Silk Touch fails, pistons cannot move it, and mining destroys it. It generates only in the inner shell of amethyst geodes between Y -58 and Y 30, scattered through that layer at roughly 1 block in 7 — typically a few dozen per geode.

Tips

Never mine a budding amethyst block: it drops nothing and cannot be replaced anywhere in that world.
Each of its 6 faces grows a separate cluster, so leave air or water on as many faces as you can.
Build the harvesting mechanism around the geode rather than trying to move it — pistons will not shift it.
Clusters take several minutes per growth stage, so a farm with many exposed faces beats one with few.

How long it takes to break

Budding Amethyst sits at hardness 1.5: 7.5 seconds per block with your fists, 0.25 with the correct netherite tool.

Iron takes 0.4 seconds against diamond's 0.3, so the upgrade worth making for this block is the one to diamond.

It will break below wooden, and you will get nothing for it. That combination of time spent and drop lost is the classic mining mistake.

Efficiency contributes its level squared plus one to tool speed, which makes Efficiency V roughly 2.5 times faster than the plain tool.

Properties

Blast resistance on Budding Amethyst is 1.5, so any explosion nearby takes it out. It stops light entirely and gives off no light. A single slot takes 64, the usual full stack. Being non-renewable, every one in the world is finite. The fastest tool for it is a pickaxe; any other kind of tool mines it no faster than a bare hand does, because the speed bonus only applies to the tool class the block is tagged for.
