Overview
Amethyst Shards come from amethyst geodes — hollow spheres of amethyst that generate underground between Y -58 and Y 30, lined with budding amethyst that grows clusters over time. Break a fully grown cluster and it drops 4 shards; break an immature one and you get nothing, so patience pays. The shards make three things, and each is genuinely useful. A Spyglass needs one shard and lets you identify distant structures. Tinted glass — four shards around a glass block — is the only block that blocks light completely while still being transparent, which makes it invaluable for mob farms and dark rooms. And a calibrated sculk sensor lets redstone builders filter vibrations by frequency, which is the difference between a sculk circuit that works and one that fires at every footstep. Geodes are also the best-looking natural structure in the game: the purple crystals chime when walked on and grow back indefinitely on budding blocks, so one geode is a permanent renewable supply. A geode found early is worth marking on a map and coming back to repeatedly. Four shards on their own also press into an amethyst block, which is the compact way to carry a surplus home.
Crafting a spyglass, tinted glass that blocks all light while staying transparent, and calibrated sculk sensors for frequency-filtered redstone. Three uses, all of them things nothing else can do.
In Minecraft, Amethyst Shard is a crafting material item. A full stack holds 64. It also turns up in chests in Amethyst Geode.
Amethyst Cluster is where it comes from, densest at about Y -20. 4 recipes call for it, including Block of Amethyst, Calibrated Sculk Sensor, Spyglass and 1 more.
About the amethyst set
How to get it
Break a fully grown amethyst cluster in a geode for 4 shards; Fortune III raises that further. Budding amethyst regrows clusters indefinitely, so 1 geode is a permanent supply — but budding blocks cannot be collected.
Tips
- Only fully grown clusters drop shards; a partly grown one breaks into nothing at all.
- Budding amethyst cannot be mined even with Silk Touch, so build the farm around the geode rather than moving it.
- Tinted glass is the only transparent block that stops light entirely — ideal for mob farm walls and dark rooms.
- Place clusters as a walkable floor for the chime sound; it is the game's best incidental audio detail.
Properties
One inventory slot holds 64, so a double chest holds 3,456.
