Overview
Prismarine Shards are the building material of the ocean, and the only source is guardians — which means an ocean monument. Four shards make a Prismarine block, eight plus black dye make Dark Prismarine, and four shards with five Prismarine Crystals make a Sea Lantern, the underwater light source that never washes away. Prismarine also forms the Conduit frame, so an underwater base is essentially built out of what the monument's guards drop. The blocks are the visual reason to bother: prismarine shifts colour subtly over time in a way no other block does, and the brick and dark variants give a complete blue-green palette that suits ocean and temple builds. Guardians drop 0 to 2 shards each and elder guardians drop more, and a monument farm — a flooded room with the spawning platform cleared — produces them in enormous quantity along with the fish and the occasional sponge. Bring Water Breathing and something to deal with Mining Fatigue. A monument converted into a base is built almost entirely from what its own guards dropped, which is one of the more satisfying loops the game offers.
