Overview
An Axolotl Bucket is how you move an axolotl and, more usefully, how you take a squad of them to a fight. Axolotls attack almost every aquatic hostile — drowned, guardians and elder guardians included — and when one of them helps you kill something, it gives you Regeneration I and removes Mining Fatigue. That second effect is the whole reason players bucket them: Mining Fatigue III is what makes raiding an ocean monument so slow, and a few axolotls released in the monument turn the fight around. Bucketed axolotls keep their variant and their health, never despawn while in the bucket, and can be released anywhere, so a bucket is also a safe way to bring one home for breeding. They come in five colours, and the blue one has roughly a 1 in 1,200 chance of appearing when two axolotls breed — the rarest ordinary mob variant in the game. Breeding needs a bucket of tropical fish for each parent, which is why an axolotl project always begins with a warm ocean trip. Bring four buckets and the monument stops fighting back.

Bucket of Axolotl is a tool item in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. It is unstackable. No recipe takes it as an ingredient.
How to get it
Use an empty Bucket on an axolotl in a lush caves biome, where they spawn in water below Y 0 next to clay. Breeding 2 axolotls needs 2 buckets of tropical fish and gives a 1 in 1,200 chance of the blue variant.
Tips
- Release axolotls inside the monument, not outside it — they need to land the killing blow for you to get the effect.
- A bucketed axolotl never despawns and keeps its colour, so bucket the rare variants rather than leading them home.
- Axolotls play dead when badly hurt, regain health and cannot be attacked in that state, so they survive fights you expect them to lose.
- They suffocate on land after about 5 minutes unless it is raining, so keep them bucketed until the water is ready.
