Overview

A Lava Bucket is the best furnace fuel in the game and the fastest way to make obsidian, and both facts matter more than the danger does. One bucket smelts 100 items — a full stack of iron ore plus more than half another — which is roughly twelve times what a single coal manages, so a lava-fuelled furnace array is the standard mid-game upgrade once you can carry lava safely out of the Nether. Poured over water it sets into obsidian where the source block was, which is how portals get built without mining a lava lake by hand. Poured onto a mob it deals continuous fire damage and is a genuinely effective, if cruel, base defence. The risks are the obvious ones: dropping it in your inventory does nothing, but placing it under yourself or next to your wooden floor ends a world's worth of gear in seconds, and lava destroys almost every item that falls into it. Since 1.17 lava is renewable through pointed dripstone: a cauldron under a dripstone tip beneath a lava source fills with a bucket's worth over time, so a small farm removes the Nether trip entirely.

Fuelling a furnace array at 100 items per bucket, casting obsidian for portals and enchanting tables, and defending a base or a mob farm with a poured lava curtain.

Lava Bucket is a tool item in Minecraft 1.21.4. It does not stack — each one takes its own slot. Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.

How to get it

Fill an empty Bucket from any lava source. A pointed dripstone above a cauldron and below a lava source drips a full cauldron in about 20 minutes, which makes lava fully renewable.

Tips

  • Never place lava while standing next to your own dropped items — a full inventory can burn in under a second.
  • Pour lava onto a water source to get obsidian, and onto flowing water to get cobblestone, which is the free cobble generator.
  • Build a dripstone lava farm above the Nether roof or at home; 5 or 6 cauldrons produce faster than a furnace burns.
  • Carry lava in the off hand slot so a mis-click on a wall does not become a mis-click on the floor you are standing on.

Properties

In a furnace it burns for 1,000 seconds, which smelts 100 items. Lava Bucket does not stack — each one occupies an inventory slot of its own.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make Lava Bucket in Minecraft?

Lava Bucket has no crafting recipe; it is obtained from mobs, chests or trading.

What is the stack size of Lava Bucket?

Lava Bucket does not stack at all. Every one you carry takes an inventory slot of its own, which is the practical limit on how many you take on a trip.
