Overview
A Water Bucket is the single most useful object to have in your hotbar underground, and the reason is fall damage: placing water on the block you are about to hit cancels the fall entirely, however far you dropped. That trick — the MLG water bucket — turns a lethal mistake into a swim, and it works from any height as long as you place at the right moment. It does several other jobs that each save a life. Pouring water onto lava turns the source into obsidian and flowing lava into cobblestone, which is how you cross a lava lake or seal a cave-in. It extinguishes fire on the ground and on yourself. It creates an infinite source when two source blocks sit diagonally or opposite each other in a 2×2 hole, so a single bucket can supply a whole farm. It carries fish, axolotls and tadpoles alive. And it pushes items along a channel, which is the basis of most item-transport systems. On any mining trip it earns its slot before the pickaxe does. Carry two if you are heading anywhere with lava.
Cancelling fall damage, turning lava into obsidian or cobblestone, putting out fires, supplying farms, and moving aquatic mobs between biomes without them suffocating. No other single item prevents as many deaths per slot carried.
In Minecraft, Water Bucket is a tool item. Every copy occupies a full inventory slot. It is not used in any crafting recipe.
How to get it
Fill an empty Bucket — 3 iron ingots — at any water source. Two source blocks in a 2×2 hole regenerate infinitely, so 1 bucket produces unlimited water once you have dug the hole.
Tips
- Practise the MLG placement in a creative world; the timing is to place one block before impact, not at impact.
- Water flows 7 blocks on flat ground, so a single source at the top of a farm irrigates a 9×9 field of crops.
- Never place water in the Nether — it evaporates instantly, which is why lava crossings there need a boat or a strider.
- Water breaks the fall of items too, so a channel under a mob farm delivers drops without them scattering.
