Overview
An Echo Shard has exactly one use — eight of them plus a compass make a Recovery Compass — and it can only be found in one place, the loot chests of an ancient city. That gives it a strange status: a single-purpose item guarded by the most dangerous mob in the game. Ancient cities generate in the deep dark below Y -50, they are enormous, and every chest sits in the sensor field that summons the Warden. Most players come home with enough shards for one compass and a considerable amount of adrenaline. The shards themselves stack to 64, glow faintly in the inventory, and cannot be crafted, traded, duplicated or farmed. If you plan a city trip, plan it around wool — placing wool blocks under your feet muffles the vibrations that trigger sculk sensors and shriekers — and around Swift Sneak books, which come from the same chests and make the crouched movement the whole trip depends on bearable. Go once, take everything the chests hold, and never go back unprepared — the compass is worth exactly one carefully planned expedition and no more than that.
Crafting a recovery compass, which points at where you last died — its only use, and the reason anyone risks an ancient city for it.

How to get it
Loot ancient city chests in the deep dark below Y -50; each chest holds 1 to 3 shards at roughly a 30% chance. There is no recipe, no trade and no mob drop.
Tips
- Carry wool and place it under your feet; wool muffles the vibrations that sculk sensors and shriekers detect.
- Take the Swift Sneak books from the same chests — they make every subsequent city trip far faster.
- Three shrieks are your warning and the fourth summons the Warden, so leave the area entirely rather than trying to outlast the darkness.
- Eight shards make exactly one compass, so a single successful city run is usually enough.
