Recovery Compass

Recovery Compass

Miscellaneous

Overview

A Recovery Compass points at the spot where you last died, which turns a panicked scramble for lost gear into a straight walk. It only works in the dimension you died in — carry it into another dimension, or die somewhere you have not died since crafting it, and the needle simply spins. It never expires and never needs resetting: each new death overwrites the target, so one compass covers every death you will ever have. The cost is what makes it a late-game item. Eight echo shards ring an ordinary compass, and echo shards generate nowhere except the loot chests of an ancient city, where the Warden makes every chest a decision rather than a formality. A single city usually yields enough shards for one compass and little else, which is why most players craft exactly one and keep it in an ender chest rather than on their person. That is the right instinct, and it costs nothing to follow: a recovery compass carried into the death that mattered is a recovery compass lying in the lava with everything else. Keep it there, and the one death that actually matters becomes a two-minute walk instead of a lost evening.

Finding your death pile before the 5-minute despawn timer on dropped items runs out — a single successful recovery of a full netherite kit pays for the whole ancient city trip that supplied the shards.

Recovery Compass is a miscellaneous item in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot. The recipe calls for Echo Shard and Compass.

It is not used in any crafting recipe.

How to get it

Craft 1 from 8 Echo Shards and 1 Compass. Echo shards drop only from ancient city loot chests, typically 1 to 3 per chest, so one city visit is roughly one compass.

Tips

  • Store it in an Ender Chest at base, not in your inventory, or it dies with the gear you are trying to recover.
  • It only tracks deaths in the current dimension, so a Nether death cannot be found with the compass held in the Overworld.
  • Dropped items despawn after 5 minutes; sprint or glide, and check the coordinates on the compass tooltip before running.
  • Bring Swift Sneak boots to the ancient city — the shards are only worth it if you leave alive.

Version notes

Added in 1.19 with the Deep Dark, ancient cities and echo shards. Its behaviour has not changed since.

Properties

One inventory slot holds 64, so a double chest holds 3,456.
