Overview

The correct way to fight a Warden is not to. It has 500 health, hits for 30 on Normal — enough to kill a player in full netherite in two blows — and fires a sonic boom for 10 that ignores armour, enchantments and any block in the way at up to about fifteen blocks. Nothing in the game answers that. It is also blind, and that is the entire counterplay: the Warden hunts by vibration, so crouching removes your footsteps, wool floors absorb them, and a snowball thrown across the room sends it walking towards the noise instead of towards you. Spawning is deliberate rather than random. Breaking or triggering a sculk shrieker raises a warning level, and the fourth shriek pulls a Warden out of the ground anywhere in the deep dark; without a target for about a minute it burrows away again. Never break a sculk shrieker without Silk Touch. The only drop is a guaranteed sculk catalyst, which spreads sculk blocks over anything that dies near it — a decorative and farming curiosity, not a prize worth 500 health. Read how to mine safely before any ancient city trip.

A sculk catalyst, and nothing else. The Warden exists as a deterrent guarding ancient city loot — the swift sneak books and the echo shards for a recovery compass are the real prize, not the mob.

The warden is blind and hunts entirely by vibration, so sneaking, wool floors and thrown snowballs to misdirect it are the real mechanics. It hits for 30 on Normal, enough to kill a player in full netherite in two blows, and its sonic boom ignores armour, blocks and enchantments entirely at up to fifteen blocks. It cannot be outrun in a straight line and it digs after you. Do not fight it: sneak past, and never break a sculk shrieker without Silk Touch.

Warden sits under Bosses in Minecraft 1.21.4. Health sits at 500 points (250 hearts). It deals 30 damage on Normal difficulty.

Expect 5 experience per kill.

Properties

Warden has 500 health, which is 250 hearts. It drops up to 5 experience when a player kills it. Its hitbox is 0.9 blocks wide and 2.9 tall, which is what decides whether it fits through a gap or a one-block-high opening.

Damage by difficulty

Warden hits for 16 on Easy, 30 on Normal and 45 on Hard — the site's stat strip shows the Normal figure, which is the one most guides quote.

A full set of diamond armour cuts that by up to 80% against a small hit and less against a large one, and Protection IV on all four pieces — 16 EPF — takes a further 64% off what is left.

Spawns in

Not a normal spawn. Emerges from the ground on the fourth shriek — three shrieks raise the warning level, the fourth spawns it — anywhere in the deep dark. Burrows away and disappears after a minute without a target.

It is restricted to Deep Dark, so it will never turn up outside those biomes however dark it gets.

Drops

Killing Warden drops Sculk Catalyst, plus up to 5 experience. Looting raises the maximum on most of these by one per level.

How it behaves

The Warden has a boss health bar, ignores most crowd-control, and cannot be despawned by walking away. Prepare the arena before summoning it, not after.

Killed by a player it drops up to 5 experience; killed any other way it drops none.

Command

In a world with cheats on, this spawns one Warden where you are standing.

Where does the Warden spawn?

Not a normal spawn. Emerges from the ground on the fourth shriek — three shrieks raise the warning level, the fourth spawns it — anywhere in the deep dark. Burrows away and disappears after a minute without a target.

How to get it

Wardens emerge from the ground on the fourth sculk shrieker activation anywhere in the deep dark biome, three shrieks raising the warning level first. Each drops exactly 1 sculk catalyst and 5 experience, and burrows away after about 1 minute without a target.

Tips

  • Crouch the entire time you are in an ancient city; sneaking produces no vibrations for a Warden to follow.
  • Lay wool on the floor and throw snowballs to misdirect it, since wool blocks vibrations entirely.
  • Mine sculk shriekers with Silk Touch or leave them alone — the fourth activation spawns a Warden immediately.
  • Do not try to outrun one in a straight line; it moves faster than a sprinting player and digs after you.
