Overview
A sculk catalyst is the block that makes sculk grow. When any mob that would drop experience dies within about 8 blocks of one, the catalyst blooms — a visible burst of soul particles — and converts the terrain around the death point into sculk, sculk veins and occasionally sculk sensors or shriekers, spending the mob's experience to do it. That last part is the detail most players miss: the experience is consumed, not dropped, so a catalyst near a mob farm quietly cancels the XP you were farming for. Used deliberately, though, it is the only way to grow sculk outside the deep dark, and it is how builders turn a room, a path or a whole cave into deep-dark terrain without hauling blocks. The spread reaches further and produces more when the mob was worth more experience, so a farm killing high-value mobs converts faster. Catalysts generate naturally in the deep dark, always in the sculk-heavy areas. Mined without Silk Touch it drops nothing and gives 5 experience; with Silk Touch you get the block, which is the only way to relocate one.

In Minecraft 1.21.4, Sculk Catalyst is a stone-family block. Hardness 3 puts it in the middle of the pack for mining speed. Light level 6 is decorative rather than functional — mobs can still spawn beside it.
It stacks to 64. Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.
How to get it
Silk Touch is required — mined any other way it drops nothing and gives 5 experience. Catalysts generate only in deep dark biomes below Y 0, scattered through the sculk floor.
Tips
- It eats the experience the mob would have dropped, so never put one near a farm you use for enchanting levels.
- The higher the mob's XP value, the further the spread, so use it beside a mob that drops 5 or more.
- Silk Touch is the only way to collect it; there is no crafting recipe and no other drop.
- Place it 1 block below your kill floor so the spread covers the floor rather than climbing your walls.

How long it takes to break
At a hardness of 3, Sculk Catalyst takes 4.5 seconds to punch out and 0.5 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.
An iron tool takes 0.75 seconds and a diamond one 0.6, so the jump that actually matters for this block is the one to iron.
Nothing here needs a minimum tier: whatever you swing, the block still drops, and the only difference is how long it takes.
Efficiency contributes its level squared plus one to tool speed, which makes Efficiency V roughly 3.3 times faster than the plain tool.

Sculk Catalyst resists blasts at 3, which usually is not enough when something explodes nearby. Light does not pass through it, and it emits at level 6. Stack size is 64 — the standard full stack. It renews, so a single world will never run out. A hoe is the fastest choice here. A tool of the wrong class is no better than your fist — the speed bonus is tied to the block's own tool tag.
