Overview
Sculk veins are the thin, creeping overlay that spreads across walls, ceilings and block faces wherever sculk grows, and they behave more like glow lichen or vines than like a full block. A vein attaches to any face of any block and can cover several faces of the same block at once, which is what gives the deep dark its unsettling organic look — the growth appears to be climbing out of the floor and over everything. Mechanically they are almost inert: no light, no redstone, no collision, and they can be waterlogged, which makes them useful as underwater decoration where most plants will not attach. A sculk catalyst produces veins as part of its spread, particularly at the edges where the conversion runs out of energy, so a sculk farm produces them automatically alongside the solid blocks. Collecting them needs Silk Touch and shears are the fastest tool, exactly as with glow lichen. For builders, veins are the detail block that makes a sculk build look grown rather than placed: run them up the base of a wall or across a ceiling and the flat sculk floor stops looking like a texture swap.
Detailing a sculk or deepslate build so the growth climbs walls and ceilings, and adding dark texture underwater where most decorative plants cannot be placed.
Sculk Vein is a stone-family block in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. A hardness of 0.2 means it is one of the quicker blocks to clear. No specific tool is required to collect it.
Light passes through it, so it will not darken the space behind it. It offers almost no protection from explosions (0.2 blast resistance). A full stack holds 64.
It is not used in any crafting recipe.
How to get it
Cut them with Silk Touch shears in the deep dark; without Silk Touch they drop nothing. A sculk catalyst also produces veins at the edge of its spread whenever a mob dies within about 8 blocks of it.
Tips
- Shears with Silk Touch are the correct tool — shears alone are fast but still drop nothing without the enchantment.
- A vein can cover multiple faces of 1 block, so place several from different directions for full coverage.
- They can be waterlogged, which makes them one of the few dark decorative overlays that work in an aquarium.
- Let a catalyst grow them for you: veins appear naturally at the outer edge of every sculk bloom.
Version notes
Added in 1.19 (The Wild Update); unchanged in 1.21.4.
How long it takes to break
Sculk Vein sits at hardness 0.2: 0.3 seconds per block with your fists, 0.05 with the correct netherite tool.
No particular tool tier is required: any tool, or none at all, still yields the drop, so the table below is about speed rather than about whether you get anything.
The Efficiency formula is level² + 1 added to tool speed, which on a block this soft tips over into instant mining very early.
| Tool | No enchantment | Efficiency III | Efficiency V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand | 0.3 s | 0.3 s | 0.3 s |
| Wooden | 0.15 s | instant | instant |
| Stone | 0.1 s | instant | instant |
| Iron | instant | instant | instant |
| Diamond | instant | instant | instant |
| Netherite | instant | instant | instant |
| Golden | instant | instant | instant |
Properties
Sculk Vein resists blasts at 0.2, which is not enough to survive anything explosive nearby. Light passes through it, and it emits none of its own. A single slot takes 64, the usual full stack. Being renewable, it can be produced indefinitely in one world. A hoe is the fastest choice here. A tool of the wrong class is no better than your fist — the speed bonus is tied to the block's own tool tag.
