Overview

Deep dark is the underground biome that behaves like nothing else in the game, and the first thing to know is that it has no sky, no weather and no rain of any kind — it generates below Y 0 in the stone under mountainous terrain, usually somewhere between Y -1 and bedrock. It is carved out in sculk: sculk blocks coating the floor, sculk veins creeping up the walls, sculk sensors that read vibration, sculk catalysts that spread the growth when something dies nearby, and sculk shriekers. No mob spawns naturally in the deep dark at all, which makes it eerily empty and also means every sound you hear is your own. The shriekers are the mechanic: step within range of one and it shrieks and raises your warning level, and on the fourth shriek a warden digs itself out of the ground. The warden has 500 health, is blind, hunts by vibration and smell, and its ranged sonic boom passes through blocks and armour. Ancient cities generate in the deep dark and hold echo shards, Swift Sneak books and disc fragments. Deep dark borders whatever cave biome surrounds it.

Ancient city loot: echo shards for a recovery compass, Swift Sneak up to level 3, enchanted golden apples, and the only source of disc fragment 5. Sculk catalysts and sensors are also collected here for redstone builds.

Deep Dark sits in the warm band of Minecraft's biome table, generating in the Overworld at a base temperature of 0.8.

Deep Dark is a cave biome: it generates underground, has no sky above it, and no weather reaches it. Rain, snow and thunder all happen in the surface biome overhead, so crops here never water themselves and cauldrons never fill.

One generated structure can appear here, among them Ancient City.

Nothing spawns naturally in Deep Dark. That is the biome's defining property rather than a gap in the data — it is the only place in the Overworld where the darkness is genuinely empty, and it is what makes the sculk sensors and shriekers here the real threat.

Cave biomes generate below the surface and have no sky. Weather never reaches them, the light level is whatever you bring, and their generation is driven by depth and noise rather than by the surface biome overhead.

How to get it

Dig below Y 0 under mountains, hills or any high, low-erosion terrain. Ancient cities generate around Y -51 and are the reliable marker; 1 city per deep dark region is typical.

Tips

  • Crouch-walk everywhere: sneaking produces no vibration at all, and a warden that never hears you never spawns.
  • Wool blocks and carpets absorb vibrations completely — lay a wool path to a chest and you can open it in silence.
  • Break a sculk shrieker with Silk Touch to collect it, or just avoid it: only naturally generated shriekers can summon a warden.
  • If a warden does spawn, sprint away and throw a snowball or an arrow to a distant block — it investigates the noise instead of you.

Version notes

The deep dark, the warden and the whole sculk family arrived in 1.19 (The Wild Update). Nothing about them changed in 1.21.4.

Climate and generation

Deep Dark has a base temperature of 0.8, which puts it in the warm band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.

Above 0.15 water stays liquid and any precipitation falls as rain.

Mobs in Deep Dark

No mob spawns naturally in Deep Dark. Hostile mobs cannot generate here at all, which means the only things you will meet are what wandered in from a neighbouring biome or what a spawner produces.

Structures found here

One structure can generate in Deep Dark: Ancient City.

  • Ancient City — A vast deepslate ruin buried in the deep dark, built around a central sculk-covered structure and a frame of reinforced deepslate that leads nowhere.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find Deep Dark?

Deep Dark generates in the Overworld, underground rather than on the surface. A locate command finds the nearest one instantly; without cheats, exploring in one direction and watching the F3 screen's biome line is the reliable method.

What spawns in Deep Dark?

Nothing. Deep Dark has no natural mob spawns of any kind.

Does it rain in Deep Dark?

No. It is a cave biome with no sky, so weather never reaches it.
