Overview

Dripstone caves is the underground biome of pointed dripstone and dripstone blocks, and it is the single best place in the game to gather copper. The biome gets its own oversized copper ore blobs on top of the normal distribution, so a dripstone cave around Y 48 will hand you several stacks of raw copper in one trip when an ordinary cave gives a handful. The caves themselves are large, dry and dramatic: stalactites hang from the ceiling in spikes and stalagmites rise from the floor, both made from pointed dripstone, and both are dangerous. A stalactite falls when the block above it is broken and deals damage scaled to the distance it fell — it is the only block in the game that can kill you by being mined. Standing on a stalagmite doubles fall damage. The useful side of that is farming: a pointed dripstone tip under a water source drips into a cauldron and slowly fills it, giving infinite water without a bucket, and one placed under lava fills a cauldron with lava, which is the only renewable lava in Java Edition. Dripstone caves border lush caves and ordinary cave systems and generate at any depth.

Bulk copper for lightning rods, spyglasses, brushes and the whole copper block family, plus pointed dripstone for renewable lava and water farms and dripstone blocks as a rough brown building material.

Dripstone Caves sits in the warm band of Minecraft's biome table, generating in the Overworld at a base temperature of 0.8.

Dripstone Caves is a cave biome: it generates underground, has no sky above it, and no weather reaches it. Rain, snow and thunder all happen in the surface biome overhead, so crops here never water themselves and cauldrons never fill.

No mob spawns only in Dripstone Caves — it draws on the general spawn pool of the Overworld.

Cave biomes generate below the surface and have no sky. Weather never reaches them, the light level is whatever you bring, and their generation is driven by depth and noise rather than by the surface biome overhead.

How to get it

Dripstone caves generate anywhere underground in the Overworld, most usefully between Y 0 and Y 60. Copper peaks around Y 48, so tunnel at that level and follow any cave with brown spikes on the ceiling.

Tips

  • Never mine a block with a stalactite hanging under it while standing below — a long spike deals more than 20 damage on impact.
  • A lava-filled cauldron under a dripstone tip refills every 20 minutes or so, which is infinite fuel from 1 bucket of lava.
  • Copper drops 2 to 5 raw copper per block before Fortune, so a Fortune III pickaxe roughly doubles an already generous vein.
  • Grow more pointed dripstone by placing a tip on a dripstone block with water above it; it extends on its own over time.

Climate and generation

Dripstone Caves has a base temperature of 0.8, which puts it in the warm band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.

Above 0.15 water stays liquid and any precipitation falls as rain.

Mobs in Dripstone Caves

On top of those, the mobs that spawn in open terrain anywhere in the Overworld can appear here too, given the right light level. Mobs that only come from a structure or a spawner — breezes from trial chambers, blazes from fortresses, evokers from mansions — are deliberately not in this list.

Also spawns throughout Overworld

Does it rain in Dripstone Caves?

No. It is a cave biome with no sky, so weather never reaches it.
