Overview

Beach is the narrow strip of sand that generates wherever a land biome meets an ocean, and it is much more useful than its size suggests. It carries sugar cane along the waterline, which is the only renewable source of paper and therefore of books, maps and bookshelves, and it is where turtles lay and hatch their eggs — the one place scutes come from, and so the one route to a turtle helmet. Buried treasure chests generate under beach sand at the centre of the chunk marked by an explorer map, and they hold the heart of the sea that a conduit is built around. Shipwrecks often run aground half-buried here rather than sinking, which makes them far easier to loot than the sunken ones offshore. Beaches take the temperature of the biome behind them: snowy beaches replace sand with a snow layer and generate beside cold biomes, and stony shore replaces the sand with stone and gravel below a cliff. Drowned climb out of the water at night, so an unlit beach camp is a bad idea, and the sand itself falls if you mine under it.

Gather sugar cane for paper, sand for glass and concrete, and turtle scutes for a turtle helmet — 5 scutes make one. Buried treasure maps from shipwrecks always point at a beach chunk.

With a base temperature of 0.8, Beach is one of the Overworld's warm biomes, and that single number decides its weather, its water and much of its wildlife.

Weather reaches Beach: it rains during storms, so crops grow and cauldrons fill on their own.

2 generated structures can appear here, among them Shipwreck and Buried Treasure.

One mob names Beach specifically among its spawn biomes: Turtle.

Beaches are the thin transition strip between land and ocean — sand, sugar cane, turtles on the warm ones, and the place a shipwreck most often ends up half-buried.

How to get it

Follow any coastline. Beaches generate automatically wherever a warm or temperate land biome touches an ocean, which on most worlds means one is within 300 blocks of spawn.

Tips

  • Turtle eggs hatch faster on sand and only at night; stand at least 10 blocks away or your footsteps will crush them.
  • Zombies that drown convert to drowned and walk out onto the beach at night, so light the shoreline before you build there.
  • Carry a shovel with Efficiency: buried treasure sits several blocks under the sand and hand-digging a beach chunk is slow.
  • Sugar cane needs a water block adjacent to the block it stands on, so a 1-wide canal behind the beach farms it faster than the shoreline.

Climate and generation

Beach has a base temperature of 0.8, which puts it in the warm band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.

Above 0.15 water stays liquid and any precipitation falls as rain.

Mobs in Beach

Turtle name Beach specifically as a spawn biome, so this is where you go to find them.

On top of those, the mobs that spawn in open terrain anywhere in the Overworld can appear here too, given the right light level. Mobs that only come from a structure or a spawner — breezes from trial chambers, blazes from fortresses, evokers from mansions — are deliberately not in this list.

Also spawns throughout Overworld

Structures found here

2 structures can generate in Beach: Shipwreck and Buried Treasure.

  • Shipwreck — A wrecked sailing ship, generated upright, capsized, or broken in two, on the sea floor or beached on the sand.
  • Buried Treasure — A single chest buried beneath a beach or shallow sea bed, findable only with a buried treasure map from a shipwreck or ocean ruin.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find Beach?

Beach generates in the Overworld. A locate command finds the nearest one instantly; without cheats, exploring in one direction and watching the F3 screen's biome line is the reliable method.

What spawns in Beach?

Turtle spawn here specifically, and the usual Overworld mobs can appear given the right light level.

Does it rain in Beach?

Yes — as rain. Cauldrons fill on their own during a storm and farmland stays hydrated.
