Overview
Five scutes make a turtle shell helmet, and that helmet gives ten seconds of Water Breathing every time you surface — the only armour piece in Minecraft with a status effect attached, and the reason anyone farms a Turtle at all. The awkward part is how scutes are produced. They are not a death drop: a baby Turtle drops exactly one scute at the moment it grows into an adult, so the supply chain is breeding, not hunting. Breed two adults with seagrass and one of them swims back to the beach where it originally hatched — turtles remember their home beach — to bury a clutch of eggs in the sand. Those eggs are the fragile part. They take several nights to hatch, they are trampled by almost every mob walking over them, including the player, and zombies specifically seek them out and smash them. Fence the nest, light the area, and stand off the sand. An adult has 30 health, is fast in water and very slow on land, and spawns on sand beaches. Feeding seagrass to a baby speeds its growth, which shortens the wait for the scute.
