Overview

Snowy beach is the cold-climate coastline: a strip of sand with a permanent snow layer over it, ice forming on the water at the edge, and none of the warmth-dependent features an ordinary beach has. Turtles do not spawn here, so there are no eggs and no scutes, and sugar cane will not grow on frozen ground next to ice. What it does keep is the sand itself, the buried treasure that generates under beach chunks marked by shipwreck maps, and the shipwrecks that run aground on it. Rabbits spawn in their white coat, and strays wander down from the snowy biome behind. The snow layer is worth collecting: a shovel turns each layer into snowballs, and 4 snowballs make a snow block, which is a cheap white building material and the only ammunition that knocks back a blaze. Freezing is not a hazard on the beach itself unless you stand in powder snow, which does not generate here. It is also the cheapest place to gather sand in a cold region, since the alternative is a long boat trip to a warm coast. Snowy beach borders snowy plains, snowy taiga, grove and the frozen or cold ocean in front of it.

Sand for glass and concrete, snow and snowballs from the surface layer, buried treasure chests holding a heart of the sea, and shipwrecks that beach here rather than sinking.

Snowy Beach is a freezing biome that generates in the Overworld. Its base temperature of 0.05 places it in the freezing band, which controls whether water freezes, whether it rains or snows, and which passive mobs are allowed to spawn there.

Weather reaches Snowy Beach: it snows rather than rains, and exposed water freezes into ice.

2 generated structures can appear here, among them Shipwreck and Buried Treasure.

No mob spawns only in Snowy Beach — it draws on the general spawn pool of the Overworld.

Beaches are the thin transition strip between land and ocean — sand, sugar cane, turtles on the warm ones, and the place a shipwreck most often ends up half-buried.

How to get it

Snowy beach generates wherever a cold land biome meets an ocean. Follow any snowy coastline; a shipwreck map found offshore will point at a beach chunk within roughly 100 to 500 blocks.

Tips

  • Snow layers regenerate as long as it keeps snowing, so a snowy beach is an unlimited snowball supply with 1 shovel.
  • Silk Touch on a shovel collects the snow layer block itself instead of snowballs, which is better for building.
  • Do not expect sugar cane: it will not grow beside frozen water, so bring it from a warmer river.
  • Buried treasure sits under the exact chunk centre marked on the map, usually 3 to 6 blocks below the sand.

Climate and generation

Snowy Beach has a base temperature of 0.05, which puts it in the freezing band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.

Below 0.15 water freezes into ice on its own and precipitation falls as snow, so a base here needs light on any exposed water.

Mobs in Snowy Beach

On top of those, the mobs that spawn in open terrain anywhere in the Overworld can appear here too, given the right light level. Mobs that only come from a structure or a spawner — breezes from trial chambers, blazes from fortresses, evokers from mansions — are deliberately not in this list.

Also spawns throughout Overworld

Structures found here

2 structures can generate in Snowy Beach: Shipwreck and Buried Treasure.

  • Shipwreck — A wrecked sailing ship, generated upright, capsized, or broken in two, on the sea floor or beached on the sand.
  • Buried Treasure — A single chest buried beneath a beach or shallow sea bed, findable only with a buried treasure map from a shipwreck or ocean ruin.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find Snowy Beach?

Snowy Beach generates in the Overworld. A locate command finds the nearest one instantly; without cheats, exploring in one direction and watching the F3 screen's biome line is the reliable method.

What spawns in Snowy Beach?

No mob is exclusive to this biome, and the usual Overworld mobs can appear given the right light level.

Does it rain in Snowy Beach?

Yes — as snow, because the temperature is below the freezing threshold. Cauldrons fill on their own during a storm and farmland stays hydrated.
