Overview

Stony shore is the coastline that generates where a mountain or hill runs straight into the sea: a cliff of stone and gravel dropping into the water with no sand, no sugar cane and none of the softness of an ordinary beach. It is a small transition biome you meet rather than seek out, but it has two real uses. The first is gravel — the shore is largely gravel, which means flint without a shovel trip to a river, and flint is the ingredient for flint and steel and for arrows. The second is exposure: because the cliff face is bare stone rather than covered in grass and trees, ore veins are frequently visible in it at sea level, and a cave mouth in a stony shore is an open door into a cave system you would otherwise have to dig for. The hazards are ordinary: drowned climb out of the water at night, and the cliff makes it easy to fall into deep water while carrying a full inventory. Stony shore borders ocean on the water side and windswept hills, mountains, taiga or forest on the land side.

Gravel for flint in bulk, exposed stone faces where ore veins and cave entrances are visible without digging, and a natural stone harbour wall for a coastal build.

With a base temperature of 0.2, Stony Shore is one of the Overworld's cold biomes, and that single number decides its weather, its water and much of its wildlife.

Weather reaches Stony Shore: it rains during storms, so crops grow and cauldrons fill on their own.

One generated structure can appear here, among them Buried Treasure.

No mob spawns only in Stony Shore — it draws on the general spawn pool of the Overworld.

Beaches are the thin transition strip between land and ocean — sand, sugar cane, turtles on the warm ones, and the place a shipwreck most often ends up half-buried.

How to get it

Stony shore generates automatically where hilly or mountainous land meets an ocean, so follow any coastline below a mountain range. The strip is usually only 5 to 15 blocks wide, and the change from beach sand to grey stone marks it precisely.

Tips

  • Gravel drops flint at about 10 percent per block, and Fortune III raises that to 100 percent, so bring an enchanted shovel.
  • Check the cliff face at sea level for cave mouths — they usually lead straight into a cave system at Y 40 or below.
  • Gravel falls when unsupported, so never tunnel horizontally under a stony shore without blocks to shore it up.
  • There is no sand here, so bring your own if you plan to smelt glass for a coastal build.

Climate and generation

Stony Shore has a base temperature of 0.2, which puts it in the cold band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.

Above 0.15 water stays liquid and any precipitation falls as rain.

Mobs in Stony Shore

On top of those, the mobs that spawn in open terrain anywhere in the Overworld can appear here too, given the right light level. Mobs that only come from a structure or a spawner — breezes from trial chambers, blazes from fortresses, evokers from mansions — are deliberately not in this list.

Also spawns throughout Overworld

Structures found here

One structure can generate in Stony Shore: Buried Treasure.

  • Buried Treasure — A single chest buried beneath a beach or shallow sea bed, findable only with a buried treasure map from a shipwreck or ocean ruin.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find Stony Shore?

Stony Shore generates in the Overworld. A locate command finds the nearest one instantly; without cheats, exploring in one direction and watching the F3 screen's biome line is the reliable method.

What spawns in Stony Shore?

No mob is exclusive to this biome, and the usual Overworld mobs can appear given the right light level.

Does it rain in Stony Shore?

Yes — as rain. Cauldrons fill on their own during a storm and farmland stays hydrated.
