Overview

Birch forest is a light, open woodland of birch trees on flat or gently rolling grass, and its whole character comes from the tree: birch trunks are always exactly 5 to 7 blocks tall here, they grow with no branches, and the pale bark makes the biome noticeably brighter than an oak forest at the same time of day. Because the canopy is thin and the trunks are straight, this is the easiest forest to clear and the easiest to build in — the floor stays lit enough that hostile mobs do not spawn under the trees during the day, which is not true of dark forest or jungle. Lily of the valley grows here and almost nowhere else, and bee nests generate on the birches at a low rate, so a birch forest is a slow but real source of honey and honeycomb. The old-growth variant is a separate biome with much taller trees. Birch wood is also the only pale plank in the game apart from pale oak, so it is what most players reach for when a build needs to look light without looking bleached. Birch forests border plains, forest, dark forest and rivers, and they very often sit between a plains village and the nearest woodland mansion.

Birch is a bright building wood that never darkens, the source of lily of the valley for white dye, and a place bee nests generate — 3 honeycomb per full nest, harvested with shears and a campfire underneath.

Birch Forest sits in the temperate band of Minecraft's biome table, generating in the Overworld at a base temperature of 0.6.

Weather reaches Birch Forest: it rains during storms, so crops grow and cauldrons fill on their own.

One mob names Birch Forest specifically among its spawn biomes: Bee.

Forest biomes are the game's default temperate terrain: trees dense enough to need a path cut through them, grass and flowers on the floor, and passive animals in the clearings. They are where most players build, because wood, food and a flat-enough surface all occur together.

How to get it

Birch forest is a common temperate biome and usually generates within 500 blocks of a plains or forest spawn. Follow the pale, evenly spaced trunks; birch leaves are a lighter green than oak.

Tips

  • Birch never grows a 2x2 giant variant, so plant saplings 1 block apart in rows and harvest the whole grid at once.
  • Place a campfire under a bee nest before shearing it or every bee inside turns hostile for 6 seconds.
  • Lily of the valley is the cheapest white dye in the game — 1 flower gives 1 dye, against a full bone for bone meal.
  • Use a birch forest as a starting base: the flat ground and 5-block trunks make an early shelter fast. See your first day in Minecraft.

Climate and generation

Birch Forest has a base temperature of 0.6, which puts it in the temperate band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.

Above 0.15 water stays liquid and any precipitation falls as rain.

Mobs in Birch Forest

Bee name Birch Forest specifically as a spawn biome, so this is where you go to find them.

On top of those, the mobs that spawn in open terrain anywhere in the Overworld can appear here too, given the right light level. Mobs that only come from a structure or a spawner — breezes from trial chambers, blazes from fortresses, evokers from mansions — are deliberately not in this list.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find Birch Forest?

Birch Forest generates in the Overworld. A locate command finds the nearest one instantly; without cheats, exploring in one direction and watching the F3 screen's biome line is the reliable method.

What spawns in Birch Forest?

Bee spawn here specifically, and the usual Overworld mobs can appear given the right light level.

Does it rain in Birch Forest?

Yes — as rain. Cauldrons fill on their own during a storm and farmland stays hydrated.
