Overview

Grove is the snowy spruce forest that wraps around the base of a mountain, sitting between the meadow or forest below and the snowy slopes above. Spruce trees grow out of a floor of snow blocks and snow layers, and the biome is one of the few places powder snow generates naturally — a block that looks like ordinary snow, drops you straight through it, and starts freezing you within seconds unless you are wearing leather boots. Because you take no fall damage landing in powder snow, experienced players use that deliberately, and a bucket of it is the only way to carry it home. Foxes spawn in groves in their snowy white coat, rabbits appear in white, and wolves generate with the snowy coat variant added in 1.20.5. Below ground, grove counts as a mountain biome for emerald generation, so emerald ore is present in the stone underneath. The spruce here is ordinary spruce wood, not a separate set. Grove borders meadow, snowy slopes, jagged and frozen peaks above it, and old growth pine taiga or forest at the same altitude.

Powder snow collected with a bucket for fall protection and freezing traps, spruce logs, snow in bulk, white foxes and rabbits, and emerald ore in the mountain stone below.

With a base temperature of -0.2, Grove is one of the Overworld's freezing biomes, and that single number decides its weather, its water and much of its wildlife.

Weather reaches Grove: it snows rather than rains, and exposed water freezes into ice.

One generated structure can appear here, among them Pillager Outpost.

3 mobs name Grove specifically among their spawn biomes: Fox, Rabbit, and Wolf.

Forest biomes are the game's default temperate terrain: trees dense enough to need a path cut through them, grass and flowers on the floor, and passive animals in the clearings. They are where most players build, because wood, food and a flat-enough surface all occur together.

How to get it

Grove generates on the lower slopes of mountains, typically between Y 100 and Y 160. Walk uphill from any meadow; the change from grass to snow-covered spruce marks the border within a few blocks.

Tips

  • Powder snow is only collected with a bucket and only placed from one, so bring at least 2 buckets if you want a landing pad.
  • Leather boots are the only footwear that lets you walk on powder snow instead of falling through it.
  • Freezing deals 1 damage every 2 seconds once the screen frosts over, and it ignores armour entirely.
  • A powder snow block at the bottom of a drop cancels all fall damage, which makes it the cheapest safe descent in the game.

Climate and generation

Grove has a base temperature of -0.2, which puts it in the freezing band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.

Below 0.15 water freezes into ice on its own and precipitation falls as snow, so a base here needs light on any exposed water.

Mobs in Grove

Fox, Rabbit, and Wolf name Grove specifically as a spawn biome, so this is where you go to find them.

On top of those, the mobs that spawn in open terrain anywhere in the Overworld can appear here too, given the right light level. Mobs that only come from a structure or a spawner — breezes from trial chambers, blazes from fortresses, evokers from mansions — are deliberately not in this list.

Also spawns throughout Overworld

Structures found here

One structure can generate in Grove: Pillager Outpost.

  • Pillager Outpost — A dark oak watchtower flying an ominous banner, surrounded by tents, log piles, and often a cage holding an iron golem or, beneath the tower, cages containing allays.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find Grove?

Grove generates in the Overworld. A locate command finds the nearest one instantly; without cheats, exploring in one direction and watching the F3 screen's biome line is the reliable method.

What spawns in Grove?

Fox, Rabbit, and Wolf spawn here specifically, and the usual Overworld mobs can appear given the right light level.

Does it rain in Grove?

Yes — as snow, because the temperature is below the freezing threshold. Cauldrons fill on their own during a storm and farmland stays hydrated.
