Overview
A Compass points at your world spawn point — not your bed, not where you are, but the block the world put you on at first login. That distinction catches people out constantly: sleep in a bed, die, respawn at the bed, and the compass still points at the original spawn hundreds of blocks away. Used properly it is the cheapest navigation aid in the game, and it is the ingredient that makes a Map show your position marker. In the Nether and the End the needle spins uselessly, because there is no world spawn to point at in those dimensions. The fix is a Lodestone: use the compass on one and it becomes a lodestone compass that points at that specific block from any dimension, permanently, and glows with an enchantment shimmer so you can tell the two apart in the inventory. A lodestone compass at a Nether portal hub is the standard way experienced players navigate the Nether, where a wrong turn in a fortress corridor otherwise costs a full inventory. Four iron and one redstone is a first-week cost for a tool you keep forever.
Finding your way back to world spawn, adding the position marker to a crafted map, and — once bound to a lodestone — pointing at a base or portal hub from any dimension.
Compass is a miscellaneous item in Minecraft 1.21.4. It stacks to 64. You make it with Iron Ingot and Redstone Dust.
Its crafting uses are Empty Map and Recovery Compass.
How to get it
Craft 1 from 4 Iron Ingots and 1 Redstone Dust. Use it on a lodestone — 1 netherite ingot and 8 chiseled stone bricks — to bind it to that block instead.
Tips
- Bind a copy to a lodestone at your main Nether portal; that one compass prevents most of the lost-in-the-Nether disasters.
- The needle spins in the Nether and the End unless the compass is lodestone-bound, so an ordinary compass is Overworld-only.
- Craft the compass before the map: a map made without one has no position marker and cannot gain one later.
- A lodestone compass stops working if the lodestone is destroyed, so build the block into a wall rather than leaving it exposed.
Properties
