Overview
A lodestone is the answer to the Nether having no working compass. Use a compass on a placed lodestone and it becomes a lodestone compass, permanently locked to that block's coordinates and pointing at it from any dimension — the only reliable navigation aid the game gives you underground, in the Nether, or in the End. An ordinary compass points at world spawn and spins uselessly outside the Overworld; a lodestone compass keeps working. The obvious use is a portal hub: put a lodestone beside each nether portal in a network and hand out compasses so anyone can find their way back. It also solves the problem of relocating a base you built before you started writing coordinates down. If the lodestone is destroyed, the compass that was bound to it spins, which makes it worth protecting the block with obsidian in the Nether where ghasts and lava will get to it. It is also the only block whose recipe consumes a netherite ingot without upgrading a tool, which is a genuine cost and the reason most players place exactly one. Lodestone compasses stack only with other compasses bound to the same lodestone, so a handful of them in a chest stays organised by destination.
Marking nether portals, remote mines and outposts so a compass can find them from any dimension, which is the only working long-range navigation in the Nether.
In Minecraft 1.21.4, Lodestone is a functional block. A crafting table turns its ingredients into Lodestone. A hardness of 3.5 makes it slow going without the right tool.
Anything below a wooden pickaxe breaks it without leaving a drop. It drops as the same block you mined. It stacks to 64.
You make it with Chiseled Stone Bricks and Netherite Ingot. No recipe takes it as an ingredient.
How to get it
Craft it from 1 netherite ingot and 8 chiseled stone bricks. That netherite ingot costs 4 ancient debris and 4 gold ingots, so a lodestone is a deliberate late-game investment rather than a convenience.
Tips
- Use a plain compass on the lodestone to bind it; the compass keeps its binding forever unless the block is destroyed.
- Surround a Nether lodestone with obsidian — a ghast fireball that removes it breaks every compass bound to it.
- Compasses bound to different lodestones do not stack, which conveniently keeps a chest of them sorted by destination.
- A lodestone compass works in the End as well, which makes it useful for finding your way back to a gateway.
How long it takes to break
At a hardness of 3.5, Lodestone takes 18 seconds to punch out and 0.6 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.
An iron tool takes 0.9 seconds and a diamond one 0.7, so the jump that actually matters for this block is the one to iron.
It will break below wooden, and you will get nothing for it. That combination of time spent and drop lost is the classic mining mistake.
Efficiency adds its level squared plus one to the tool speed, so Efficiency V is about 4 times faster than the same tool unenchanted.

Properties
Lodestone resists blasts at 3.5, which usually is not enough when something explodes nearby. Light does not pass through it, and it emits none of its own. Stack size is 64 — the standard full stack. The fastest tool for it is a pickaxe; any other kind of tool mines it no faster than a bare hand does, because the speed bonus only applies to the tool class the block is tagged for.
