Overview
A loom applies banner patterns, and it is the only sensible way to do it. Without one, every pattern needs its own crafting recipe made of a banner, a dye and a specific arrangement of items, and remembering thirty-odd of those is unreasonable. The loom takes a banner, a dye and optionally a banner pattern item, shows you every pattern available as a list of previews, and applies the one you click for a single dye. Patterns stack — a banner can carry up to six layers — so complex designs are built by running the same banner through the loom repeatedly with different dyes. Six of the patterns are locked behind banner pattern items: the flower, creeper, skull, thing, globe and piglin snout, which come from woodland mansions, creeper heads, wither skeleton skulls, enchanted golden apples, wandering traders and bastions respectively. Copying a finished banner onto a blank one of the same base colour costs nothing but the blank. A loom is also the shepherd villager's job site block, and a shepherd buys wool and sells dyed carpet and beds and, eventually, paintings.

Minecraft classifies Loom as a functional block. A crafting table turns its ingredients into Loom. Its hardness of 2.5 makes it a normal, unhurried block to mine.
Mining it returns the block itself, so it is safe to relocate. A blast resistance of 2.5 means a single creeper will clear it away. It stacks to 64.
You make it with String and Oak Planks. No recipe takes it as an ingredient.
How to get it
Craft it from 2 string and 2 wooden planks. String comes from spiders, from cutting cobwebs with a sword, or as a gift from a tamed cat, so a loom is available very early.
Tips
- A banner holds a maximum of 6 pattern layers; the loom stops offering patterns once you reach it.
- Copy a finished banner by putting it and a blank banner of the same colour in the loom — the pattern is free.
- Banner pattern items are consumed only for the 6 special designs; ordinary patterns cost 1 dye each.
- Wash a banner clean in a cauldron of water, which removes 1 layer at a time from the top.
How long it takes to break
Loom sits at hardness 2.5: 3.8 seconds per block with your fists, 0.45 with the correct netherite tool.
Iron manages 0.65 seconds and diamond 0.5, which makes iron the tier that changes how this block feels.
There is no tier requirement to worry about. Any tool, or none, returns the drop; the numbers below just say how fast.
Efficiency adds its level squared plus one to the tool speed, so Efficiency V is about 3 times faster than the same tool unenchanted.

Properties
Loom resists blasts at 2.5, which is not enough to survive anything explosive nearby. Light does not pass through it, and it emits none of its own. One inventory slot holds 64, the normal full stack. An axe is fastest here; any other class mines it at bare-hand speed, because the bonus only applies to the class the block is tagged for. As furnace fuel it burns for 15 seconds — one and a half smelting operations.
