Overview
A Clock tells you where the sun is when you cannot see the sky, which matters more than it sounds. Deep in a mine you have no idea whether stepping outside means dawn or a field of creepers; the clock's dial shows the sun and moon rotating through a day-night cycle of 20 real minutes, with daylight lasting about 10 of them. Read it before you climb the ladder and you never walk into the wrong half of the cycle again. It also matters for anything timed around night: phantom spawning after three in-game days without sleep, villagers going to bed and restocking their trades twice a day, and beds refusing to work until dusk. The dial spins randomly in the Nether and the End, where there is no sun to track, so it is an Overworld instrument only. Four gold ingots and a redstone dust is a steep price on day one and trivial by the time you have a Nether trip behind you, and a clock in an item frame reads at a glance without opening your inventory — which is why most base entrances have one next to the Compass.
Knowing whether it is safe to surface from a mine, timing a villager restock or a bed, and telling how long is left before night without cutting a hole in the ceiling.
In Minecraft, Clock is a miscellaneous item. A full stack holds 64. It is crafted from Gold Ingot and Redstone Dust.
Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.
How to get it
Craft 1 from 4 Gold Ingots and 1 Redstone Dust. Gold is easiest gathered in the Nether, where gold ore generates at every Y level rather than peaking around Y -16 like the Overworld deposits.
Tips
- Put the clock in an item frame by your mine entrance so you can read it without pausing to open the inventory.
- The dial is useless in the Nether and the End — it spins at random there, because neither dimension has a sun.
- Villagers restock their trades twice a day, so a clock tells you when to come back for a second round of emeralds.
- Sleep before the third night to stop phantoms spawning; the clock is how you notice dusk arriving underground.
