Overview
A Spyglass answers the question every explorer asks: is that shape on the horizon a village, a pillager outpost, or a pile of terrain? Holding use zooms the view sharply and vignettes the edges of the screen, letting you identify a structure, count mobs on a distant ridge, or check whether a cave entrance is worth the walk before committing twenty minutes to it. It has no durability, no cooldown and no cost per use, so there is no reason not to keep one in the hotbar of any exploration kit. Practically, its best uses are unglamorous: reading the banner on a distant outpost, spotting the item frame on an end ship before you glide to it, checking an ocean surface for a monument, and finding the exact ridge a mountain goat is standing on. It also works while riding a horse or a boat and while gliding with Elytra, which makes it the natural partner for long flights. Crafting needs one amethyst shard, so the real prerequisite is finding an amethyst geode — one geode visit supplies shards for a spyglass, a Tinted Glass run and a calibrated sculk sensor.
Identifying distant structures, biomes and mobs before you walk to them, and lining up a landing spot while gliding — the practical alternative to a 500-block round trip that ends in nothing.
In Minecraft, Spyglass is a tool item. Every copy occupies a full inventory slot. It is crafted from Amethyst Shard and Copper Ingot.
Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.
How to get it
Craft 1 from 1 Amethyst Shard and 2 Copper Ingots. Amethyst shards come from breaking a fully grown amethyst cluster, which yields 4 per cluster with any pickaxe.
Tips
- Zoom works while gliding, so use it mid-flight to pick out the end ship's item frame or a village's church roof.
- It narrows your field of view dramatically; do not scope in with hostile mobs nearby, because you will not see the flanks.
- One amethyst geode supplies far more shards than a single spyglass needs, so mine a full wall while you are there.
- Pair it with a Map — the map tells you where structures could be, the spyglass tells you which one you are looking at.
