Overview
Calcite is a pure white, faintly speckled stone that generates in exactly one place: the middle shell of an amethyst geode, sandwiched between the outer smooth basalt and the inner amethyst blocks. That means every piece of calcite in your world came out of a geode, and finding one is a matter of tunnelling between Y -58 and Y 30 until you break into a hollow full of purple crystals. It also occasionally generates in patches on stony peaks, which is the only surface source. As a building block it fills a genuine gap: Minecraft has very few pure white materials, and the alternatives all have problems — snow melts near light, quartz has to be smelted and hauled from the Nether, and white concrete needs dye. Calcite is simply white stone, mined with any pickaxe, with a hardness of 0.75 that makes it quicker to break than stone. Its speckled texture reads as marble at a distance, which is why it turns up in temples, statues and anything meant to look classical. Breaking into a geode also gives you smooth basalt and the amethyst itself, so one trip supplies three materials.
A pure white building stone that needs no smelting, no dye and does not melt — the practical alternative to quartz for white walls, columns and statues.
Minecraft classifies Calcite as a stone-family block. It is gathered by mining rather than crafted. At a hardness of 0.75 it takes a moment to break but never slows a build down.
It needs at least a wooden pickaxe to drop anything; a weaker tool destroys it for nothing. Mining it returns the block itself, so it is safe to relocate. A blast resistance of 0.75 means a single creeper will clear it away.
It stacks to 64. Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.
How to get it
Mine it with any pickaxe from the middle layer of an amethyst geode, which generates between Y -58 and Y 30, or from surface patches on stony peaks. 1 geode yields several stacks.
Tips
- Geodes are the only reliable source; tunnel between Y -58 and Y 30 and listen for the amethyst chime.
- Calcite has a hardness of 0.75, so it mines faster than stone and much faster than the deepslate around it.
- Break the geode's calcite shell carefully — the budding amethyst inside can never be collected, even with Silk Touch.
- Pair calcite with smooth basalt from the same geode for a natural black-and-white palette that costs nothing.
How long it takes to break
Calcite sits at hardness 0.75: 3.8 seconds per block with your fists, 0.15 with the correct netherite tool.
An iron tool takes 0.2 seconds and a diamond one 0.15, so the jump that actually matters for this block is the one to diamond.
A weaker tool still breaks it, but anything under wooden returns nothing — you spend the time and lose the drop, which is how most veins get wasted.
The Efficiency formula is level² + 1 added to tool speed — at V that is about 3 times the unenchanted rate.
| Tool | No enchantment | Efficiency III | Efficiency V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand * | 3.8 s | 3.8 s | 3.8 s |
| Wooden | 0.6 s | 0.1 s | instant |
| Stone | 0.3 s | 0.1 s | instant |
| Iron | 0.2 s | 0.1 s | instant |
| Diamond | 0.15 s | 0.1 s | instant |
| Netherite | 0.15 s | 0.1 s | instant |
| Golden | 0.1 s | 0.1 s | instant |
Properties
Calcite has a blast resistance of 0.75, so any explosion nearby destroys it. It blocks light completely and emits no light of its own. 64 fit in a slot — a full stack. It is not renewable: what the world has is all it will ever have. The fastest tool for it is a pickaxe; any other kind of tool mines it no faster than a bare hand does, because the speed bonus only applies to the tool class the block is tagged for.

Frequently asked questions
How do you get Calcite in Minecraft?
Mine Calcite with Wooden Pickaxe and it drops itself.
What tool do you need to break Calcite?
Wooden Pickaxe or better is required; anything weaker destroys the block without dropping it.
Is Calcite blast resistant?
Calcite has a blast resistance of 0.75, so an explosion nearby will destroy it.
How many Calcite fit in one stack?
64 per stack, so a double chest holds 3,456 Calcite.
Is Calcite renewable?
Not renewable: once the world's Calcite is used up, no more can be produced.
How long does Calcite take to break?
With the correct tool at netherite tier it takes 0.15 seconds; by hand it takes 3.8 seconds.
