Overview
Ancient debris is the rarest ore in Minecraft and the only source of netherite. One to three blocks generate per chunk, in a band from about Y 8 to Y 24 peaking at Y 15, with a much rarer scatter from Y 8 to Y 119 above it — and crucially it never generates exposed to air. That single rule makes cave prospecting completely useless for it and forces the two standard techniques: a strip tunnel at Y 15 cleared with beds or TNT, or careful tunnelling with an Efficiency pickaxe. Beds are the classic method because they explode in the Nether, they are cheap, and one bed clears a sphere of netherrack instantly while leaving the debris behind — ancient debris is blast-resistant, fireproof and floats in lava, so nothing you do to the surrounding terrain destroys it. It requires a diamond pickaxe. Fortune has no effect and Silk Touch is pointless; the block always drops itself. Smelt it into netherite scrap, and 4 scrap plus 4 gold ingots make 1 netherite ingot, which upgrades exactly one diamond item at a smithing table with a netherite upgrade template.
Netherite ingots, which upgrade diamond tools, weapons and armour into gear that never burns in lava, floats instead of despawning, and resists knockback slightly — all while keeping every enchantment.
In Minecraft 1.21.4, Ancient Debris is a stone-family block. It has no crafting recipe — you collect it by mining it where it generates. Expect to wait: its hardness of 30 is well above average.
Mine it with a diamond pickaxe or better, or you get no drop at all. Broken correctly, it drops itself. A blast resistance of 1,200 makes it a sensible choice where explosions are likely.
A full stack holds 64. Its only crafting use is Netherite Scrap.
How to get it
Mine it with a diamond or netherite pickaxe at Y 15 in the Nether. It never touches open air, so tunnel, bed-mine or blast with TNT; expect 1 to 3 blocks per chunk at that depth.
Tips
- Bed mine at Y 15: place a bed, click it from behind cover, and the blast clears netherrack while the debris survives.
- Ancient debris floats in lava and cannot burn, so debris blasted loose is always recoverable.
- Fortune does nothing to it and Silk Touch is unnecessary — any diamond pickaxe gives the same 1 block.

How long it takes to break
At a hardness of 30, Ancient Debris takes 150 seconds to punch out and 5 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.
An iron tool takes 25 seconds and a diamond one 5.7, so the jump that actually matters for this block is the one to diamond.
Below diamond the block breaks and simply vanishes. Bring the right tier or leave it in the ground.
Each Efficiency level adds level² + 1 to the tool's speed, so a level V tool clears this about 3.8 times faster than an unenchanted one.

Properties
Blast resistance on Ancient Debris is 1,200, enough to shrug off a creeper or point-blank TNT. It stops light entirely and gives off no light. One inventory slot holds 64, the normal full stack. It is renewable, so a single world can supply an unlimited amount of it. The fastest tool for it is a pickaxe; any other kind of tool mines it no faster than a bare hand does, because the speed bonus only applies to the tool class the block is tagged for.
