Overview

A bastion remnant is the richest chest loot in the game guarded by the most easily provoked mobs in the game, and almost everything about surviving one is social rather than tactical. Wear at least one piece of gold armour before you come within sight of the walls and ordinary piglins will ignore you completely. Then obey the two rules that override it: opening any chest, and mining gold ore or a gold block, angers every piglin with line of sight regardless of what you are wearing. Piglin brutes do not care at all — they are always hostile, ignore gold entirely, and hit for around 13, so the treasure-room variant is a fight you should plan rather than stumble into. Of the four layouts, the treasure room holds the most gold and the most brutes, the bridge variant has magma cube spawners and a long drop, the hoglin stable is the friendliest, and housing units are a maze. What makes the trip worth it is ancient debris and netherite ingots appearing directly in chests, the Pigstep music disc, which exists nowhere else, and enchanted books carrying Soul Speed.

Netherite ingots and ancient debris straight from chests, gilded blackstone, the Pigstep disc, Soul Speed books, crying obsidian for a respawn anchor, enchanted golden apples and gold blocks by the dozen. It is the fastest route to netherite that does not involve strip-mining at Y=-16.

A ruined blackstone fortress in one of four layouts — bridge, hoglin stable, housing units and treasure room — each packed with piglins and, in the treasure variant, piglin brutes that ignore gold armour entirely. Bastions hold the richest loot in the Nether: ancient debris, netherite ingots, gilded blackstone, enchanted books with Soul Speed, and the Pigstep music disc. Wear gold armour before entering, never open a chest or mine gold in front of a piglin, and expect a fight regardless in the treasure room.

It is uncommon in the The Nether, restricted to Nether Wastes, Crimson Forest, Warped Forest, and Soul Sand Valley, and it generates anywhere in the Nether, often as a huge blackstone mass above or below the lava sea.

How to get it

Bastions are uncommon and generate in nether wastes, crimson forest, warped forest and soul sand valley, often as a huge blackstone mass above or below the lava sea. They cannot generate in basalt deltas, which narrows the search to 4 of the 5 Nether biomes.

Tips

  • Wear one piece of gold armour before the walls are in view; piglins judge you on sight and do not give second chances.
  • Loot chests out of piglin line of sight, or build a wall first — opening a chest angers every piglin that can see it.
  • Piglin brutes ignore gold armour entirely, so bring a shield and fight them in a doorway rather than in the open.
  • Bring blocks and a water-free way down: the outer walls overhang lava and a knockback hit from a hoglin is a long fall.

Version notes

Added in 1.16 with piglins and netherite. 1.16.2 added piglin brutes, which removed the loophole where a single piece of gold armour made a bastion walkable end to end.

Properties

It generates in the Nether, where one block of travel covers eight in the Overworld, water evaporates on placement, and beds explode instead of setting a spawn point. In a world with cheats on, /locate structure minecraft:bastion_remnant gives the coordinates of the nearest one. Without cheats, an explorer map from a cartographer villager is the reliable route for the structures that have one; everything else is exploration.

Where it generates

Bastion Remnant generates in 4 biomes: Nether Wastes, Crimson Forest, Warped Forest, and Soul Sand Valley. Outside those it will not generate at all, however far you travel.

Notable loot

Its loot includes Netherite Ingot, Ancient Debris, Gilded Blackstone, Music Disc — Pigstep, Block of Gold, Crying Obsidian, Spectral Arrow, Magma Cream, and Enchanted Golden Apple. These are the notable entries rather than the full loot table — the common filler (bread, coal, iron nuggets) is omitted, and in some structures the best of it comes from a vault or a spawner rather than a chest.

Mobs found here

Piglin, Piglin Brute, Hoglin, and Magma Cube generate here. Several of them spawn nowhere else, which is usually the reason to make the trip.

What to watch out for

4 things to prepare for before you go in:

  • Opening chests angers every piglin present
  • Piglin brutes hit for 13 and cannot be pacified
  • Magma cube spawners in the bridge variant
  • Long falls into lava from the outer walls

Frequently asked questions

Does gold armour make bastions safe?

It stops ordinary piglins attacking on sight, but it does nothing once you open a chest or mine gold, and piglin brutes are hostile regardless.

Can you get netherite from a bastion without mining?

Yes. Bastion chests contain ancient debris and sometimes netherite ingots directly, which is usually faster than strip-mining for debris.

Which bastion variant is the most dangerous?

The treasure room, because it concentrates both the best loot and the piglin brutes. The bridge variant is second, mainly for its magma cube spawner and the drop into lava.

How do I find Bastion Remnant?

Bastion Remnant generates in the The Nether, only in Nether Wastes, Crimson Forest, Warped Forest, and Soul Sand Valley, and is uncommon. /locate structure minecraft:bastion_remnant finds the nearest one instantly with cheats on.

What loot is in Bastion Remnant?

The notable entries are Netherite Ingot, Ancient Debris, Gilded Blackstone, Music Disc — Pigstep, Block of Gold, Crying Obsidian and 3 more.

When was Bastion Remnant added?

Bastion Remnant was added in Java Edition 1.16.
