Overview
Nether wastes is the default Nether biome — the endless red netherrack terrain of caverns, lava falls and open lava seas that most portals open into. It is the biome that defines what the Nether feels like: no water, no weather, no day, a bedrock ceiling at Y 128 and a lava ocean at Y 31 that fills the bottom of the world. Zombified piglins spawn in numbers and are neutral until one is hit, at which point every zombified piglin within about 30 blocks turns on you at once and they do not forget quickly. Ghasts drift through the open caverns firing explosive fireballs that can be deflected back with a well-timed hit or an arrow. Magma cubes bounce in the lower reaches. Nether fortresses generate in the wastes more often than in any other biome, and a fortress is the only source of blaze rods, wither skeleton skulls and nether wart. Glowstone hangs from the ceilings in clusters, quartz speckles the walls, and nether gold ore is common. Nether wastes borders every other Nether biome, and it is where most portal-to-portal tunnels are dug.

How to get it
Step through any nether portal — most open into nether wastes. Fortresses generate in strips across the dimension, so travelling in a straight line for 500 to 1,000 blocks usually crosses one.
Tips
- Never hit a zombified piglin: the whole group aggravates and they will follow you through a portal.
- Fill in your portal's surroundings with cobblestone — ghasts cannot destroy it, and a broken portal strands you.
- Glowstone shatters into 2 to 4 dust without Silk Touch, and 4 dust rebuilds a block, so it is close to break-even either way.
- Read nether travel and survival before your first trip; 1 Nether block equals 8 Overworld blocks.
Climate and generation
Nether Wastes has a base temperature of 2, which puts it in the hot band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.
Above 0.15 water stays liquid and any precipitation falls as rain.
