Overview
An Enchanted Golden Apple is the strongest consumable in Minecraft and cannot be crafted at all. Eating one gives Absorption IV — eight extra hearts — for 2 minutes, Regeneration II for 30 seconds, and, crucially, Fire Resistance and Resistance for a full 5 minutes each. That combination makes a player briefly close to invulnerable: 20% damage reduction from Resistance on top of armour, complete immunity to lava and fire, and healing that outpaces most damage sources. It is what the wither fight, an ancient city dash and a hostile-server raid are built around. Because Mojang removed the recipe in 1.9, every one in your chest was found: bastion remnant treasure rooms are the best source by a wide margin, with dungeons, mineshafts, desert temples, ruined portals and woodland mansions supplying the rest at low rates. Players call them notch apples, after the crafting recipe that used blocks of gold. Treat them as single-use insurance for the fights you cannot afford to lose, not as food — the 4 hunger points they restore are incidental. Nothing else in the game turns a losing fight around this completely.
Surviving fights nothing else survives — the wither, a Warden encounter, a lava fall — through 8 Absorption hearts, Resistance and 5 minutes of Fire Resistance at once.
As food, Enchanted Golden Apple is judged on two numbers: hunger restored and saturation. It gives back 4 hunger and 9.6 saturation. That saturation ratio puts it among the more efficient foods in the game.
Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot. Look for it in the loot of Ancient City and Bastion Remnant. Its only crafting use is Thing Banner Pattern.
How to get it
Not craftable since 1.9. Bastion remnant treasure rooms are the richest source; dungeon, mineshaft, desert temple, ruined portal and woodland mansion chests also generate them at roughly 1 to 3% per chest.
Tips
- The 5 minutes of Fire Resistance means an accidental lava swim is survivable if you eat one before diving in.
- Save them for the wither and the Warden; ordinary golden apples cover everything else you will meet.
- Bastion treasure rooms have the best rate — bring gold armour so the piglins leave you alone while looting.
- Curing a zombie villager works with an ordinary golden apple, so never waste an enchanted one on it.
Version notes
The crafting recipe was removed in 1.9; the item has been loot-only ever since, and 1.16's bastion remnants became its most reliable source.
