Golden Apple

FoodGoldenHunger restored 4

Overview

A Golden Apple is an emergency heal you can eat mid-fight. It grants Absorption I for 2 minutes — two extra hearts that sit on top of your health bar and soak damage before your real hearts do — plus Regeneration II for 5 seconds, which heals roughly four health points on its own. Because it can be eaten at any hunger level, it works as a panic button in a way that steak does not, and that is the whole reason players carry a stack into the Nether or a raid. The second use is curing a zombie villager: hit the zombie with a Splash Potion of Weakness, feed it a golden apple, and after two to five minutes it becomes a villager with permanently discounted trades. That trick is the backbone of every cheap-Mending trading hall, and it is worth far more than eight gold ingots. Crafting is 8 gold ingots around one apple, so a nether gold farm or a piglin bartering run makes them affordable. Apples themselves come from oak and dark oak leaves at a low drop rate, which is usually the real bottleneck.

Absorbing damage mid-fight with 2 extra hearts and a burst of Regeneration, and curing zombie villagers into permanently discounted traders alongside a Splash Potion of Weakness.

Golden Apple is edible, and how much it is worth depends on its saturation as much as its hunger value. Eating it restores 4 hunger points and 9.6 saturation. It is one of the better foods to carry on a long trip.

A full stack holds 64. It also turns up in chests in Desert Pyramid, Abandoned Mineshaft, Dungeon (Monster Room), Ruined Portal (Overworld) and 2 more. You make it with Gold Ingot and Apple.

No recipe takes it as an ingredient.

How to get it

Craft 1 from 8 Gold Ingots and 1 Apple. Apples drop from decaying oak and dark oak leaves at about a 0.5% chance, so a large tree farm is the practical apple source.

Tips

  • It can be eaten with a full hunger bar, which makes it the only healing item that always works when you need it.
  • Curing a zombie villager gives permanent trade discounts — see villager trading and cheap Mending.
  • Absorption hearts do not regenerate; once the 2 extra hearts are gone, eating another apple is the only way back.
  • Dark oak trees drop apples faster than oak because they drop from far more leaf blocks per tree felled.

Properties

Eating it restores 4 hunger and 9.6 saturation — a ratio of 2.4, which is what decides how long you stay full rather than how fast the bar refills. One inventory slot holds 64, so a double chest holds 3,456.

Golden Apple is in the loot tables of Desert Pyramid, Abandoned Mineshaft, Dungeon (Monster Room), Ruined Portal (Overworld), Ruined Portal (Nether), and Igloo.

  • Desert Pyramid — A sandstone temple with an orange-and-blue terracotta motif on its floor, always with a hidden shaft under the centre tile.
  • Abandoned Mineshaft — Long branching wooden corridors with rails, minecarts, support beams and floating sections over ravines and caves.
  • Dungeon (Monster Room) — A small cobblestone-and-mossy-cobblestone room with a mob spawner in the centre and one or two chests against the walls.
  • Ruined Portal (Overworld) — A broken nether portal frame of crumbling obsidian and blackstone, with lava, netherrack and gold blocks scattered around it, plus a chest.
  • Ruined Portal (Nether) — The Nether-side counterpart, generating on cliff faces, floors and ceilings throughout every Nether biome with the same crumbling obsidian frame and loot chest.
  • Igloo — A small snow dome containing a bed, a crafting table, a furnace and a redstone torch on the floor.

How it compares to other foods

Sorted by saturation ratio, Golden Apple is 2 of 41 foods in the game. Ratio is saturation divided by hunger restored: it is what decides how long the hunger bar stays still, not how fast it refills.

Golden Carrot leads the list at a ratio of 2.4, and anything at or above 1.6 is worth carrying on a long trip.
