Overview
Nether fossils exist to solve one problem, and it is a problem most players do not know they have: bone meal without skeletons. A large bone-block ribcage jutting out of the soul sand gives you hundreds of bone meal for the cost of a pickaxe swing each, which is enough to bone-meal a tree farm, force sugar cane, or dye a wardrobe white, and it takes minutes rather than an evening at a skeleton spawner. The complication is the neighbourhood. Soul sand valleys run the highest ghast and skeleton spawn rates in the Nether, the soul sand itself slows you to a shuffle exactly while a ghast is lining up a fireball, and the blue fog cuts your sight distance to the point where you hear the shot before you see it. Approach along the top of the fossil rather than the valley floor, put a wall of cobblestone between yourself and the open air, and mine from cover. There is nothing else here — no chest, no spawner, no hidden chamber — so once the bone blocks are in your inventory there is no reason to stay in the most hostile biome in the dimension.

How to get it
Nether fossils are uncommon and generate only in soul sand valley biomes, roughly between Y=32 and Y=100, protruding from the soul sand rather than buried in it. A single valley normally holds 2 or 3, and the white bone against dark blue sand is visible from a long way off.
Tips
- Mine from the top of the fossil, not the valley floor, so soul sand never slows you while a ghast has line of sight.
- Place a two-block cobblestone wall on the open side before you start; fireballs cannot round a corner and ghasts lose interest.
- Take the whole skeleton in one trip. Coming back to a soul sand valley twice is worse than carrying a heavy inventory once.
- Skeletons here are ordinary skeletons, not wither skeletons, so a shield handles them and you need no Wither protection.
Version notes
Added in 1.16 when soul sand valleys were created, six years after the Overworld fossil introduced the bone block in 1.10. The structure has not changed since.
Properties
It generates in the Nether, where one block of travel covers eight in the Overworld, water evaporates on placement, and beds explode instead of setting a spawn point. In a world with cheats on, /locate structure minecraft:nether_fossil gives the coordinates of the nearest one. Without cheats, an explorer map from a cartographer villager is the reliable route for the structures that have one; everything else is exploration.

Nether Fossil generates in one biome: Soul Sand Valley. Outside those it will not generate at all, however far you travel.

Its loot includes Bone Block. These are the notable entries rather than the full loot table — the common filler (bread, coal, iron nuggets) is omitted, and in some structures the best of it comes from a vault or a spawner rather than a chest.

Skeleton, Ghast, and Enderman generate here. Several of them spawn nowhere else, which is usually the reason to make the trip.
