Netherite Scrap — Minecraft item

Overview

Netherite Scrap is what ancient debris becomes in a furnace, and four of them plus four gold ingots make one Netherite Ingot. It exists as a separate item mostly to make the netherite chain feel like a process rather than a recipe, but it has one very practical property: like every netherite item, scrap is immune to fire and lava, so a stack dropped in a Nether accident survives where diamonds would not. That makes it the safe form in which to carry your haul home. Ancient debris itself is the hard part. It never generates exposed to air, so no amount of cave exploring finds it — it must be dug out, and the standard methods are a strip mine at Y -16, a bed explosion cascade, or a TNT strip that reveals debris without destroying it, since debris survives explosions. Blast resistance is why beds and TNT work at all. Each vein is 1 to 3 blocks, and 24 debris is a full netherite kit's worth. Plan the trip around fuel, a diamond pickaxe and Fire Resistance, and the rest is patience.

How to get it

Smelt ancient debris in a furnace or blast furnace, 1 scrap per block. Ancient debris generates between Y 8 and Y 22 with a peak around Y -16, in veins of 1 to 3, and needs a diamond pickaxe.

Tips

Scrap is lava-proof, so smelt debris in the Nether before the walk back if you can spare the fuel.
Ancient debris is never exposed to air; strip mining or explosives are the only ways to find it.
Beds explode in the Nether and debris survives the blast, which is the cheapest bulk mining method.
A blast furnace smelts scrap in half the time, and 24 scrap is a complete netherite armour set and tools.
