Overview

The copper door, added in 1.21, is the third door material in Minecraft and sits between the other two in behaviour. Wooden doors open by hand and are opened by any villager or zombie that can reach them; iron doors need a redstone signal and nothing opens them by accident. A copper door opens by hand like a wooden one but is made of metal, so it fits builds where a wooden door looks wrong and an iron door would need wiring — and, unlike either, it changes colour over time. It oxidises through the standard four copper stages, so a copper door on a build ages with the rest of the copper around it, and honeycomb waxes it at whatever shade you like while an axe scrapes it back. Mechanically it is an ordinary two-block door: it can be opened by a redstone signal as well as by hand, two placed side by side form a double door, and zombies cannot break it on Hard difficulty because it is not a wooden door. That last point matters for base defence and is the reason many players swapped their spawn-room doors to copper.

A hand-opened metal door for builds where wood looks wrong, a zombie-proof entrance that needs no redstone, and a door that ages in step with a copper roof or facade.

Copper Door is one of the 14 variants of this shape in the game. What changes between them is the material, and with it the hardness, the drops, the durability and the recipe — so every figure on this page is this variant's own. Oak Door is the same shape in a different material.

Minecraft classifies Copper Door as a functional block. Copper Door has a crafting recipe, so it is renewable as long as you can source its ingredients. At a hardness of 3 it takes a moment to break but never slows a build down.

Broken correctly, it drops itself. Because it is transparent it does not block light. A full stack holds 64.

It is crafted from Copper Ingot. It goes into exactly one recipe: Waxed Copper Door.

About the copper set

How to get it

Craft 3 doors from 6 copper ingots. That makes it the cheapest metal door in the game — an iron door needs 6 iron ingots for the same 3 doors, and copper is far more abundant.

Tips

  • Zombies cannot break copper doors on any difficulty, unlike wooden ones, so use them on an outer wall.
  • It opens by hand and by redstone, which makes it the only door that works both ways without a lever.
  • Wax it with honeycomb before your build weathers if you want the bright orange to stay.
  • Place 2 side by side for a double door; the hinges mirror automatically as with every other door.

Version notes

Copper doors and trapdoors arrived in 1.21 (Tricky Trials) and are unchanged in 1.21.4.

How long it takes to break

Hardness 3 puts Copper Door at 4.5 seconds a block bare-handed, or 0.5 seconds with the right tool at netherite tier.

An iron tool takes 0.75 seconds and a diamond one 0.6, so the jump that actually matters for this block is the one to iron.

The drop does not depend on the tool — bare hands work as well as anything — so the table below is purely about speed.

Each Efficiency level adds level² + 1 to the tool's speed, so a level V tool clears this about 3.3 times faster than an unenchanted one.

Properties

Copper Door resists blasts at 6, which usually is not enough when something explodes nearby. Light passes through it, and it emits none of its own. A single slot takes 64, the usual full stack. The block is tagged for pickaxes, and only that class gets the speed bonus; everything else mines at bare-hand rate. As furnace fuel it burns for 15 seconds — one and a half smelting operations.
