Copper Trapdoor — Minecraft block

Overview

The copper trapdoor, added alongside the copper door in 1.21, gives builders a metal trapdoor that opens by hand. Before it, the choice was a wooden trapdoor that any player can flip or an iron one that needs redstone, and neither suited a metal-and-stone build with no wiring in it. A copper trapdoor covers that gap and, like everything else in the copper family, weathers through four oxidation stages, so it matches a copper roof as that roof ages. Beyond the aesthetics it does everything a trapdoor does: it can be placed at the top or bottom of a block, opened by hand or by redstone, waterlogged, and used as a climbable ledge on a ladder shaft. Builders use trapdoors far more often as decoration than as doors — as shutters, as a lip under a roof edge, as a fake bench, as the hinged front of a hidden entrance — and copper adds a metal option to all of those without the iron trapdoor's redstone requirement. Zombies cannot break it, and it blocks mob pathfinding when closed, which makes it a cheap way to seal a farm shaft.

Copper Trapdoor is one of the 14 variants of this shape in the game. What changes between them is the material, and with it the hardness, the drops, the durability and the recipe — so every figure on this page is this variant's own. Oak Trapdoor is the same shape in a different material.

In Minecraft 1.21.4, Copper Trapdoor is a functional block. A crafting table turns its ingredients into Copper Trapdoor. Its hardness of 3 makes it a normal, unhurried block to mine.

Anything below a stone pickaxe breaks it without leaving a drop. It drops as the same block you mined. Light passes through it, so it will not darken the space behind it.

Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot. The recipe calls for Copper Ingot. Its only crafting use is Waxed Copper Trapdoor.

How to get it

Craft 2 trapdoors from 4 copper ingots. Copper ore drops 2 to 5 raw copper per block and peaks around Y 48, so a single mining trip produces more trapdoors than most builds ever need.

Tips

It opens by hand and by redstone, unlike the iron trapdoor, which needs a signal for every use.
Waterlog it to make a hatch that keeps water on one side, which is useful on an ocean build.
A closed trapdoor blocks mob pathfinding, so 1 of them seals the top of a spawner shaft.
Wax it with honeycomb to lock its oxidation stage to match the rest of a copper facade.

Introduced in 1.21 (Tricky Trials) with the rest of the expanded copper set; unchanged in 1.21.4.

How long it takes to break

Hardness 3 puts Copper Trapdoor at 15 seconds a block bare-handed, or 0.5 seconds with the right tool at netherite tier.

You are looking at 0.75 seconds on iron and 0.6 on diamond — the iron step is where the time actually falls.

A weaker tool still breaks it, but anything under stone returns nothing — you spend the time and lose the drop, which is how most veins get wasted.

Efficiency contributes its level squared plus one to tool speed, which makes Efficiency V roughly 3.3 times faster than the plain tool.

Properties

With 6 blast resistance Copper Trapdoor usually goes down to a nearby explosion. It is transparent to light and produces no light. 64 fit in a slot — a full stack. The fastest tool for it is a pickaxe; any other kind of tool mines it no faster than a bare hand does, because the speed bonus only applies to the tool class the block is tagged for. As furnace fuel it burns for 15 seconds — one and a half smelting operations.
