Overview
A lightning rod attracts lightning strikes that would otherwise land nearby and channels them into itself, which is what stops a thunderstorm setting fire to a wooden build. That is the reason most players place one: a single rod on the roof of a wooden house removes the entire category of storm damage for the cost of 3 copper ingots. It also emits a redstone signal when it is struck, which makes it a storm detector and the trigger for anything you want to happen during lightning — a chain of lamps, an alarm, or a mechanism. Two further uses are worth knowing. A lightning strike converts a pig into a zombified piglin, a villager into a witch, a creeper into a charged creeper and a red mooshroom into a brown one, so a rod placed deliberately beside a penned mob is how you produce those conversions on purpose; a charged creeper's explosion is the only way to obtain a mob head. And lightning striking copper reverts that block and its neighbours to unoxidised, which is a genuine tool for tuning a copper build's colour.

In Minecraft 1.21.4, Lightning Rod is a redstone block. Lightning Rod is made at a crafting table. Hardness 3 puts it in the middle of the pack for mining speed.
Mine it with a stone pickaxe or better, or you get no drop at all. Broken correctly, it drops itself. Because it is transparent it does not block light.
A full stack holds 64. It is crafted from Copper Ingot. Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.
How to get it
Craft it from 3 copper ingots. Copper drops 2 to 5 raw copper per ore block and peaks around Y 48, so the recipe costs a couple of minutes of mining at most.

At a hardness of 3, Lightning Rod takes 15 seconds to punch out and 0.5 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.
Iron takes 0.75 seconds against diamond's 0.6, so the upgrade worth making for this block is the one to iron.
It will break below stone, and you will get nothing for it. That combination of time spent and drop lost is the classic mining mistake.
Efficiency adds its level squared plus one to the tool speed, so Efficiency V is about 3.3 times faster than the same tool unenchanted.
